X5 45e Satisfaction and couple questions
Hello, as the title suggests, I’m wondering if people are satisfied with their X5 45e’s or not (barring the battery recall x2).
As crazy as it sounds I’m looking at the 45e, F150 Limited, or the GV80 Prestige Trim. I really like the idea of a PHEV but I’m getting a bit nervous based on the (seemingly) numerous drivetrain failures and other failure. I am aware its a new-ish model year for the X5 itself, and it is a new model for the 45m. Questions: 1. What kind of mileage are you actually getting with just hybrid? I believe its supposed to be just 20 mpg right?I ask cause if i go on a long road trip (more than a day) where I cant recharge overnight at the hotel what kind of mileage can I expect and will the battery recharge while driving at all? 2. Is it true the hybrid tech is Toyota hybrid tech? |

So far, I like the vehicle. Keep in mind that this is the third model year for the 45e, just the first one where things have slowed down enough that BMW decided they could add the US market where hybrids are becoming more popular and some of the demand for elsewhere is tapering, at least a little.
1.It appears that the US delivered vehicles are not allowed to use as much of the battery as those sold elsewhere. My guess is that that will allow BMW to better honor the battery warranty. I've gotten over 40-miles, and 30 is advertised for the US models, while using a different test in Europe, it's rated at 50 miles. Almost nobody gets that much. 2. While BMW and Toyota have some tech sharing, I've not read that this in the X5 is borrowed from Toyota...might be, don't think so. |

Some have gotten in the high 20 mpg range at a steady speed that's level. Having some battery capacity to help prevent the need for a kickdown in the transmission under some circumstances can make things work more efficiently. I haven't driven mine far enough or long enough to say what I have experienced yet.

Lol where I live in Texas its mostly flat, no hills to be seen. I have watched and read some reviews and it seems like it can charge up to 50%(?) while driving, but I have to wonder how that impacts MPG.

You can set it to charge to 100%, but it really ruins your mpg :-)

That is correct. It doesn't make sense unless you want a charged battery for example to pre condition for some days without possibility to charge.

The latter half of your comment is why I’m targeting Aug or sep 2021 to buy one of those 3 new builds, I figure a year is sufficient time to get most of the issues ironed out. |

I've had mine about 4 weeks. Have 610 miles on it, and have just under a half tank of fuel left. I'm getting around 60 miles/gallon with driving about 40-60 miles on days, and charging once per day.
I went from a F10 550 (hitting the gas station about 2x / week) to this. Still blows my mind when the truck is rolling in the driveway dead silent... With regards to range, I don't believe I've ever got less than 30 miles on a charge, have hit 40 a few times. Aceman |

Aside from the battery recalls, is there anyone that has owned their 45e for more than 3 months (US release was July 2020 I think) or longer period in Europe and haven't actually had any issues?
I know its a new model 1st year but the issues seem to be piling up and making me lean toward a different vehicle... or just waiting |

Other than choices of options and maybe some software, I don't think MY 2021 45e is much different than the 2019 MY sold elsewhere. BMW makes continual running changes in their vehicles. IOW, it's not a first year model for the most part, although the US version may have some software differences. Our lights and side markers are different than many places, that is not different than the 40 and 50 models we've had for years now.

I have two things. The car switching from electric individual to hybrid without obvious reason. And now and then the max charging switches down to 6A increasing the charging time. For me these two things are no major problems, software glitches. I have heard / hope they will be solved with the 11/2020 update. For now no other issues. I am happy with the car. The 45e engine was introduced in the 745e before the X5. First deliveries 02/2019. I had a X5 40e before for two years they had to change the steering wheel column. Seems to be a general X5 problem. No problems with the hybrid system. Modern cars have so many electronics that can only cause trouble. My first car was a Toyota Starlet 1.0. No options. I got it as a student when it was 6y old. It was in the family for 10y. Never had any problems. |

I did have some issues with electronic gadgets. Like pairing by iPhone, getting Carplay and getting the BMW app to work. I had to specifically ask to update my car. After the (two) updates all works. Although now I'm at a version where I can only 'search' for destinations in the navigation and it frustrates me. I can not type city, street, etc... If I use voice commands it searches by default in UK because my system language is set to English. (Live in Belgium and speak Dutch) |

I have the car since januari 2020. I hav ehad several minor issues, the sunroof being the main one but this is also software related and should be solved in the upcoming update.
The drivetrain and hybrid systems have all been flawless, no worries there. I guess the software for all gadgets and shenanigans is a different one than the one that actually drives the car and manages the ICE-EE-trans combination, or at least that part of the software is less prone to issues. The whole recall thing is a hardware related issue and I am guessing once resolved doenst risk stranding the car. I have asked myself, if it gets stolen, would i get the same one or different? I would get the same car, different trim perhaps just to have it feel slightly different, but I would get the hybrid again, no questions. That should answer your question best i think |

I have had my BMW X5 45e for 5 weeks now, about 1,300 miles. Excellent SUV overall and it satisfies my EV desire as someone who has also owned a Tesla in the past.
My only complaint is the slow 3.7 kW charger. It should really be 6 or 7 kW minimum. Our other PHEV is a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid with a 16 kWh battery pack. The 6.6 kW charger in that PHEV can fully recharge the Pacifica plugin battery pack within 2 hr 20 min from 0%. I suspect BMW will fix this with a more powerful charger in 2022. 6 or 7 hours to recharge the 45e is stupid slow. Last edited by RocketGoBoom; 10-28-2020 at 10:20 AM.. |
