Given that...the ethernet/OBDII and ethernet/lightning are much cheaper together. Would you pay the extra for the MX+ or get the other set up and have the option to go down the ESys road?

Definitely overthinking this...hence why I never started coding!
$60 at ScanTool.net is a good deal. MX+ is convenient and more reliable than the Lightning-to-Ethernet adapter. The L2E adapter will sometimes not connect and you have to unplug and plug back in ... but it is really fast. I'd get the MX+ as your first unit for Bimmercode still.

Thanks. To my surprise, the MX+ is back down to $60 on Amazon. Going to order it now.

Anyone else looking, it seems to be the best deal. Not sure what the shipping time/cost is from scantool, but amazon is always quick and free!

I am trying to connect with ENET cable + Ethernet adapter and I am not able to. I had the ENET cable bought about three (3) years back and at that time I connected using the laptop and the esys and now I used the same cable + an Ethernet adapter bought from Amazon following a link from bimmercode but... it does not want to connect. I am using an iPhone, I put it in airplane mode, disabled the WiFi, disabled the Bluetooth, I get an IP in it but it does not want to connect. Does anyone have any ideas?

As mentioned above, try unplugging from smartphone (ie Lightning or USB as the case may be) and try again. A few times.

Beyond that, not going to be able to be all that helpful, apologies, but ... Don't know what differences there are in Ethernet/ODBII adapters, but mine stated explicitly it supports G-series, not just I- and F-series. If you can get ESys to connect to the G05 with that cable, I have to imagine that would have to work for the smartphone Ethernet interface. But trying to debug something like that on a smartphone is not likely to be effective — too many moving pieces and not enough observability.

This complexity is one of the reasons I have been recommending the simple and known reliable OBDLink MX+ interface to get started with Bimmercode on this, G05, forum.

For reference, this is the cable I use: https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-OBD-E-N...e/352633844972

It worked yesterday, God knows why it was not working. Quick question, is something that you can code without buying the full app?

Nope, nothing can be coded without paid app.

On the L2E adapter, it was probably that "reliability thing" requiring occasional unplug and replug. That's what was behind the "less reliable" set of comments.
