I use the touch screen a lot. No smudges. Try washing your hands.

I've seen some on ebay, expensive still - I suspect it'll become cheaper as time goes by. Might treat myself ...

Do you think it will need some coding? Or is it just a plug and play installation?

Here's the part on RealOEM

https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-parts/bmw-repair-kit-gearshift-lever-knob-61319475056

However, when you look at the parts catelog, it looks like the control panel has a different part number if you have glass controls vs if not. It may be because the Start/Stop button is also glass, but everything else is fundamentally the same. However, it may not be as simple as just replacing the gear selector.

The Glass Control gearshift has an illuminated "X".
So it may need extra wiring and control.

I've never seen mine glow anything but orange. How do you get it to glow white?

I think it’s during the day it’s white. Similar to the other controls.

Indeed, fades to white when I pull out of the garage, fades to orange when I pull back in / at night

The knob adds a touch of luxury. Makes the black knob look like it belongs somewhere else, no offense!

It’s one of those luxury items that passengers first notice and say “damn!”. I adore the glass controls and the quality to the level they are finished.

I think you are right,
I did not order glass controls because it was a $1000 feature here, but I agree with you, the black knob is to "simple looking" against glass, the BIG questions:
can it be retrofitted ?
what will be the cost?
needs coding?

Yes, the iDrive glass controller can be retrofitted. You can find it on Amazon under "crystal iDrive".
The price is $139 and the installation time is supposed to be 15 minutes.
No coding is necessary.
Interesting but would love to get the shift knob instead

I think the crystal shift knob may become available later this year as well.
I agree with you, it will be great to change just the outer cover to crystal and not deal with the actual module

You will have to post pictures. How much did they charge you for the crystal shifter? When you say not deal with the module do you mean it wont light up or some other functionality is not accessible?

Be sure I will post pictures and results as soon as I have it installed
I made a deal with my dealer, so if it works I will have to buy it, still don't know the final price, probably around the $800 neighborhood
As for the module, what I meant was that instead of buying the whole module, its going to be an easy job, just remove the old one and plug the new one, no one knows if coding will be necessary until they perform the installation.
I'm kind of anxious now 😂

As promised, here's the the crystal knob installed.
We found an issue during installation, the "X" inside the crystal has no illumination, they tried re coding the car without any luck, so the knob will have no illumination at night until they find a way to activate it (if there is one.....)
The "P" from the little square "parking" button works fine (red color), for me is not a big deal, I love the look of it, check it out:

NEW UPDATE: All cameras working normal, didn't have the need to take it to dealer , it seems like a bug that disappear after leaving the car parked for about 90min
