The following email just came through from BMW Australia. There was also an earlier news article (from about a week ago) suggesting not only would car p;lay be free, but also android auto would be rolled out. If the first has happened, hopefully the second will follow in an update:

Dear valued customer,

This is to inform you about an important change of your Apple CarPlay Preparation option as part of BMW ConnectedDrive.

BMW Australia has announced that it will offer its customer the Apple CarPlay digital platform with an unlimited runtime as part of a global BMW initiative.

Here�s what this means for you:

As your vehicle is equipped with Apple CarPlay Preparation, BMW Australia is extending your support for CarPlay to be unlimited without interruption. This extension will be at no additional cost to you, and there is no action required on your side. The conversion to unlimited runtime Apple CarPlay will commence immediately. Full completion is expected by early 2020.

To use Apple CarPlay in your vehicle with your iPhone, you need to choose �Apple CarPlay� as the connection mode for your mobile device in the Communication settings.

Should you have any questions, please contact info@bmw.com.au or call BMW Customer Care at - 133 BMW (133 269). You can check the current status of Apple CarPlay and ConnectedDrive services for your vehicle by visiting https://www.bmw-connecteddrive.com.au/.

Anyone up for a renewal in the near future? Was wondering if it’s gone free yet. I have a few more months, and was dreading if I had to get a refund from BMW.

My CarPlay has expired and I've found no way to get it back.

Have you updated the services in your vehicle? (Goto home screen, navigate to "apps" (left Nav), press "options" button on idrive controller and then select update.)

If that does not work, call a Genius: 844-443-6487

I think we need to buy 1 times the Apple carplay ?
I have in mine the "preparation of apple carplay". When i look to connected drive I have to buy it 1 time by paying 300 euro.
Looks not free to me ....

Well, I just tried that and now it works again. After I did the update, my phone wouldn't reconnect. So I restarted iDrive and my phone, and now it works

For the record and tracking, the "Car Play now free" email has now also been delivered in Canada by BMW Canada today as well.

Yes, the press release said anyone that has paid for it will receive a refund.
