Ambient air

Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone like me decided to go for an ambient air option which is supposed to be a built in fragrance system. Does it work for you? I have it turned it on on max setting and I can’t smell a thing.

I bought the demo car and got ambient air as it was fully equipped. I must say I really love it and use it daily. Buy it you won't regret it

I have the option and it is always enabled on level 1 because I find it finishes too quickly at maximum. I find I get that "puff" of smell when the car starts up and then its very very very very subtle afterwards but its still there. Its an option I would not pay separately for. It was part of the package that I got.

You have it turned on...but is anything in the holder where you put the little canister of fragrance?

Also, I wonder if you have to open the canister before first use. I'm sure they have it sealed so it's not just wasting away evaporating while the car is sitting idle in inventory.

Thanks guys. I have it open, computer says that the fragrance level is getting lower over time. My friend bought very similar car and he also can’t smell a thing. Also I asked the dealer to check it and they said it should be working fine.

Maybe I still smell new leather mostly (I got the car in Sept).
Maybe it’s my nose I’ll check another fragrance option, maybe something will be stronger.

The US has always been the red-headed stepchild for auto hardware compared to many European and Asian versions of vehicles - and frequently has nothing to do with regulations. This has worked for me fairly well as an air freshener, and have used it in previous BMWs:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have two attached to the B-pillar vents behind the front seats (it does restrict lateral movement of the vents, but I doubt passengers would notice, and we seldom have anyone in the back seats):

That’s a great placement point. I don’t think anyone would even see it. Are you using the “ Sparkling Raindrops scent stick”? Like it?

Yep; very faint scent (probably the least intrusive), in my experience lasts for 30-ish days or so. I doubt it would overcome wet dog or dirty kid socks, but keeps the air from smelling stale from sitting closed awhile.

I think the main advantage is that when selecting ambient air option the "system" has some type of an ion stick to make the air cleaner. I dont really understand it but the ionized aircon is an extra option for the Range Rover Sport and Porsche Cayenne, it seems to come only with ambi package with the BMW

It works for me. You have to turn it on. And on the start, you would smell the hell of it. Feels like a girl seating in the passenger seat.

Merc does it way better, and you can actually refill with your own fragrance, who doesn't prefer some nice Creed, Tom Ford or diptyque , and the glass bottle looks way more expensive and luxurious than the plastic cartridges BMW makes. It's a great feature Mercedes started, but BMW doesn't execute it well enough. With the money, get yourself a diptyque car diffuse and choose from many amazing fragrances

Can you tell me what actual fragrance you're using? What's it called?
I just don't smell a thing and maybe they put something very subtle in my car in the factory.

Does the charcoal filter do anything with recirculating air function? I was going to look into the under the seat canisters, but didn’t want to smell like a cheap fragrance. I still have no idea why BMW doesn’t offer it in the US. Do they just sit and throw darts at a board when picking options for the US and everyone else?

Does the G05 X5 have two sets of filters? If it does, then the activated charcoal fresh air filters are just that...they are filtering pollen/dust etc as well as "cleaning" the fresh air as it passes through the activated charcoal.

The interior recirculating filters are the ones that would filter air after it is inside the cabin...it takes care of dust & pollen brought in from the outside...as well as dander and other stuff that is shed from the passengers (and pets). And if the g05 has interior circulation filters...do they come with activated charcoal?

EDIT: I've answered my own questions (from the TIS)...looks like the g05 X5 can have interior microfilters:

I’ve got the option in my car, but since I got it used I don’t have any fragrances to test. I may get some after I start stinking up the car after workouts. The sales guy I dealt with has tried the system, and noted that the cartridges run out very quickly though. Unless I can refill them myself it seems like an awful lot of money in cartridges for very little benefit. Looks a lot nicer than a vent-mounted air freshener though. And almost as nice as a pine tree hanging from the rear-view
