My X5 wants to live after shut off...
Apparently my car is wants to keep certain elements on after i get out of the car and turn the alarm on. I tried cranking the car on and off, press the radio button to turn off and does seem to turn most things off. But notice the car wants to live even when i place the key inside the house and revisit the car after 10 minutes.
Any ideas? Is this a Skynet feature that just enabled itself? |

My current F11 5 series needs 20 minutes before going into full shutdown. Certain lights stay powered on before that, just like yours.
Presume that it is by design. |

I guess so, it literally sometimes sounds like the same coding "sound" going under the hood. Very odd. Maybe they are trying to OTA test without our acknowledgment or at least test it.

A BMW guy once told me it takes an F15 and G05 around 20-25 minutes to actually fully shut down all its Systems.
Only the Space Shuttle took longer..... |

I've noticed that my radio will continue to play music through the speakers even after hitting the start/stop button to shut off the engine, exiting the vehicle and shutting the door. I have to lock the car once I've exited and shut the door to turn off the radio when this happens. Has anyone else experienced this? It happens to me maybe once a week (the X5 is my daily driver).

In our F15, if you pushed the off button a second time (i.e., pushing it again after shutting down the engine), that immediately turned off the radio. (That is not to say that other electronics weren't necessary still running.) We don't have our G05 yet, but I expect it would behave similarly.

My radio stays on randomly after shut off too!
Oh this happens a lot ... I come home and park the car hitting the glass button off and walk inside with the fob, an hour + goes by, walk into the garage (without the key fob) and find the parking lights randomly on as if the car wants to leave and go somewhere. I noticed if i don't turn the car alarm on after i get out of the car this happens more often.... What ever happen to just parking the car, power off and go on your way? I find myself checking up on the car by randomly cracking the garage entry door to peek out and make sure it's really off. Sometimes the wife asks what are you doing ... i just play it off instead of explaining, "the car wants to live". I'm waiting for the BMW/Alexa to kick in one day and ask me where are you going? after a shut off. |

This applies with the new cars today that have key fobs with no blade. Modern (F & G chassis) BMWs still have multiple ignition position. There is the:
There's also an iDrive selection that will move the car into the "idle state" when you open the front doors. Go into iDrive and make sure that you have that checked off...then you probably won't need to press the START button twice. (highly recommend checking your owners manual in case there are differences based on which version of iDrive you have) Here's some info from the owners manual (which might also be helpful in knowing which state your BMW is in when you press the START button...as well as making selections in iDrive to go into idle state when you shut down):

To shut the rest down, hold down the Radio volume button for around 3-5 seconds, and everything else shuts down, including the Instrument cluster. My last car was an F15, and the Start/Stop button did both, it was convenient and made sense, but for some reason they've separated it in the G05. Considering the G05 is driven so much by S/W, I wish they would change it back. |

This has been normal behavior for my BMW's going back over 20 years. The car will gradually turn itself off and it's normal.
If you have time to spare, listen carefully for about 15 minutes after you turn off the car and lock the door. You'll hear the car go through its shutdown. Just press the engine button (had to do it twice in some earlier cars like the F10). Open the door from the inside (radio will/should shut off after everyone in the car opens their respective door). Lock the car from the outside and over the course of the next 15 or so minutes, the car will go through its shutdown. |

I think this is why the OP started the post...he doesn't want to LOCK the car because it's in his garage...and just wants the car to shut down and go into the idle state (engine off and all control modules shut down). But it sounds like his car is remaining in either "standby state" or "radio ready state". This means some control modules are remaining unnecessarily powered until the car begins to go into sleep mode and starts shutting down systems...which can take from 10-20 minutes (not sure of the actual length on modern BMWs...it used to be 16 minutes with the old E chassis BMWs).

Update:
I did have the "idle state" enabled. Pressing the start button 2x at shut off does add the the interior lighting + the other components to stay on for about 20-25 minutes. It is what it is, thanks for your help everyone. |
