Bridgestone Alenza 20 Runflat and Snow Not Good

Bought my X5 last March and have 10K on these tires. I thought they handled great during the summer. Today was the first snowfall for them and they were brutal. No traction and tons of sliding.

I live in Minnesota and know my bad. Really surprised how bad these were today, normally I am fine with a good all-season.

Anyone else have experience with these on snow?

Had them on my GX460 and they worked fine. Haven't driven in snow with them on the X5 this year yet. Q7 had Pirelli P Zero AS, and weren't great, but not RF.

Agreed. I just noticed this the other day when we had a few inches in Illinois. Slipping and sliding. I just ordered Michelin CrossClimate suv. Should be here Friday. I had Michelin defenders in the past and they were excellent. The CrossClimate seems to be the best out there based on European reviews, it's been out there for some time now. They call it a summer tire that's snow certified. Can't get any worse right?

I have these on my X3 with 21" …it only snowed once last year and it was about 1". It was a terrifying experience for me. I was sliding all over the place.

My previous car X5 with 20" All Seasons had no problem. I used to take it out when it snowed just for fun. I won't be taking the X3 out if I don't have to during the winter.

I have sport tires on my 22" X5 now. I am assuming it will be the same as the Alenzas in the snow.

I tested the 20" Pirelli Scorpion AS RF at high speed in slop/slush and snow for 300 miles on a trip and was impressed. When roads were being closed around Washington DC from ice last year on a trip, we were in complete control.

With winter coming soon, this has me a bit worried as 1" shouldn't be too bad with all seasons...

That said, there are 2 Bridgestone Alenza tires used with the X3 and X5. I believe the 21" Bridgestone Alenzas on the X3s are "Alenza 001" which are considered summer tires.

The ones that are OEM on X5s with 20" wheels should be the"Alenza Sport A/S" which are classified as All seasons.

Could you confirm that you have the Alenza Sport A/S on the X3? If so, I might have to take a look around tirerack soon

Ahh my bad, I thought they were all the same. You guys should be fine then. My tires are classified as summer on the X3.

Here in the UK my car is on P Zeros summer tyres, on the 20" wheels. That has me a bit worried, even if in the UK we don't get normally harsh winters.

Not all snow is created equal. The water content and the air temperature can make big differences in 2" of snow you can handle with ease and 2" that leaves you sliding all over.

Very true and something I am used to in Minnesota. But -- in the case of these tires they had zero traction at times, something I haven't run into on the X5 and I've had many tires over the years. Some all seasons are just miserable on snow/ice. None are awesome, but I rarely have had issues. This was different and actually pretty scary.

They are toast tomorrow. Putting the Conti DWS 06 on to replace them. Normally I toss the run flats right away when I buy a BMW. Kept these for 10K.

I had similar concerns/issues with the Alenzas on the stock 20s. Decided to go the TireRack route and put a set Blizzaks on the MSW Type 49 Wheels.

Let us know how the Conti DWS do on the G05. I had them for years on my F15 X5 and loved them. I was hoping to get a few years out of the OEM tires, but if they are as bad as you say, I may need to swap them out sooner.

So far so good on the Conti DWS. Light snow in Minneapolis Sunday night and they were much better that the old tires.

For driving, they feel more planted and steering feels a little tighter. On the other side, they are a tad more noisier.

Happy so far. Only a few hundred miles on them.

Thanks for posting that pic. This is the first time I've seen those MSW look halfway decent. But you probably have air suspension, set to a low position in that pic, no?

Had the opportunity yesterday to drive in (very) light snow, some surface ice, on the OEM 20s. Bridgestone Alenza Sport A/S, 275/45/R20 M+S, RFT. They worked fine, no different that I could tell than when I ran them on my GX and as I expected. Absolutely not as good as their winter Blizzaks, which I've also run, but certainly acceptable for an all-season run flat tire. Will no doubt get the opportunity to test further in real winter conditions - probably next week around here - but so far, as good (for me) as my previous all-season Pirelli P Zeros. Faint praise, but there it is.

Very true. I have seen even the best tires on the biggest trucks slide all over in certain kinds of snowy/slop conditions.

I do have air suspension, however this pic was in standard drive position and not lowered.

Also woke up to our first bigger snow of the season this morning with about 8" total snowfall. New winter setup worked like a champ.

Love them. Would not go back. Super quiet. Very planted ride quality. More maneuverable. Works way better in rain and light snow than the OEM runflats. Even got rid of the wobble I felt at higher speeds which realignment did not fix. Overall solid purchase and no regrets.

Excellent. Let us know how it does in deeper snow when you get a chance. Seems like the closest to a "perfect" tire for the x5.

I’ve had the chance to use the OEM Bridgestone Alenza 20s in two snowstorms so far and my experiences haven’t been nearly as bad as the OP. The tires seem as good to me as the Michelin OEM runflats I had on my previous X5 and I had no issues. Barring any future horrible experiences, I think I’ll stick with these tires until they wear down and then switch over to the Continental DWS.

Is it a product of RFTs? This is my first vehicle with RFTs, so I am not a bit worried! I wish I would've gone non-RFT with a spare. The Pros definitely do not outweigh the Cons. I am probably stuck since the Tire and Wheel insurance covers those particular tires.
