I saw a shop that does paint work on fancy cars like Ferraris, Lamborghinis and the likes use it to prevent damages on the wheel. Should have asked them about how they got it.

Well, after reading post after post of unhappy owners, we need to weave a bit of humor in once in a while.
Actually I do have a steering wheel cover and seat covers too. Use them whenever I bring the car in for state inspections, service, etc. I couldn't find a decent looking steering wheel cover so my sister in law made me one, plain black and hugs the wheel - purrrrfect! |

You don't have to worry about transferring whatever is on your fingers to the actual screen - dirt, sand, tire-black, road salt, hot-dog relish (my X5 doesn't have the optional sink package after changing a tire, f'rinstance) - and the protector costs about 17 bucks. I have no idea what a scratched Nav screen costs to replace. I'm guessing more.

I think the same reason - with a protector it's easy to just do a quick wipe with a cloth to clean the screen, without worrying about what's on the cloth (the microfiber you just used to clean the cameras, for example). I had an instrument cluster protector, but the glare was just too significant for me to leave it on, so I'm just careful what I clean the screen with; I don't worry about the Nav screen now though.

You mean if I'm not constantly touching them? prevents scratches on the much softer material BMW uses

There is another interesting reason for the nav screen protector. If one would like to adhere one of those small magnetic phone holders to an unused spot on the screen (for example the right lower triangular corner on LHD cars), the stock display surface will not take an adhesive. The protector surface works like a charm. And one might want to use that spot because there aren't a lot of other surfaces for such easily-removable and low-chance-of-damage spots. I'll figure out pics to demonstrate if needed.

A nice big magnet near a TFT screen, I wouln't recommend it at all! It's not as bad as the old days of the TFT, but you're still messing up with the screen high frequency clock, and whatever is packed back then. There's a reason TFT's are heavily shielded.

6 months of flawless operation seems to indicate this to be a non-issue at least with that placement. Magnets don't generally affect compensated crystal oscillators materially and this isn't any kind of an electron gun technology :-). Shielding is against electrical noise (both in and out), not magnetic, at least in this case.
