Software update - no welcome external lights

I picked up my car yesterday after the software update. I noticed the external welcome lights no longer lit up as I walk towards my car. Anybody experienced the same issue?

I check the settings in idrive, all the boxes were checked for headlights, side lights and handle lights.

thanks!

There was a discussion on this the other month. I think we determined that now the welcome lights only work if you have comfort access enable to unlock the doors. Mine light up and have it set to unlock. You may want to do a search and get confirmation.

Confirmed. I noticed the same problem. I hope to find a way to code it back to the old way...I would like to feel important enough to be welcomed but don't need it unlocked...

homerrr Ok, good to know. I know on 07/2019.70 does have the pathway lighting, but I do have comfort access turn on. I just hate how "dumb" the comfort access can be if you need to unload something from your car. The lock, unlock, lock cycle gets annoying! Especially with the acoustical confirmation.

Agree 100%. That's why I turned off unlock, but lock is still on, like the setup that way not having the beeps going all the time.

homerrr I need to do that. I don't see the point of the unlock since the handle grab unlocks it anyway. The proximity is nice, but is a nuisance. Do you have any problems with the vehicle not locking when walking away? I happens maybe 1 out of every 10 times.

Maybe once in 200 times that it hasn't locked, but I think that may have been due to some weird combination of unlocking and opening and closing doors and trunk that caused it. Generally it always locks when I walk off.

That's probably it. There are so many what ifs, and it is definitely user error. The worst, the car not powering down when opening the door. If I am on a call, hang up, and get out...iDrive does not power down. However, if I am just listening to music, stop and down down, then open the door...iDrive shuts down. These are first world problems, so I'll take it.

Confirm you have welcome lights come on without the car unlocking when approaching?

Hi homerrr,

Yes the welcome lights turn on as soon as I approach the vehicle.

The question was: "Confirm you have welcome lights come on without the car unlocking when approaching?" There is a reason it was asked that way. Can you please answer the asked question.

So, how about sharing the reason for your specific question? Why not just state how it's supposed to work?

There are exterior light settings in iDrive where you can set these parameters. You can also disable the carpet lighting altogether.

General information

Depending on the equipment, the exterior lighting of the vehicle can be set individually.

Activating/deactivating

Via iDrive:

"CAR"

"Settings"

"Exterior lighting"

Select the desired setting:

"Welcome and goodbye"

When unlocking the vehicle, individual light functions are switched on for a limited time.

"Door handle lights"

Door handles and the ground in front of the doors are illuminated for a limited time.

"Welcome Light Carpet"

The area next to the vehicle is illuminated for a limited time.

I think he is asking for specifics to determine in what case the lights are coming on since the operation changed with an update and may have been fixed in a recent one.

For 07/2019.55 I can confirm that the lights come on when approaching the vehicle without the doors being unlocked but once I get closer then the doors do unlock. In this case the welcome lights come on without the doors being unlocked but I do have it set to unlock so it is just a timing issue.

From what others have reported, if I didn't have it set to unlock the welcome lights wouldn't come on.

Correct. That's what my X7 does and I have the same software version that you have.

It would just be easier for the OP if someone told him how it's supposed to work based on how the available settings are configured so he can troubleshoot the problem.

I was afraid that was the case. Exactly as said above, it used to turn the welcome lights on when approaching the vehicle when "unlock when approaching" was disabled (I.e. need touching to unlock), but that changed when I upgraded to 07/2019.55. I was trying to verify if yours was working the proper way again but that's not likely since you have "unlock when approaching" enabled.
Thanks for the clarifications y'all

I've duplicated your same error. This is obviously a bug with software version 07/2019.55 and 07/2019.59 (which I have). Version 07/2019.59 was installed from the factory when I took delivery. With the "Unlock" upon approaching disabled you have to touch the door handle before the Welcome/Puddle lights will come on.

Pretty freaking obvious those idiot Engineers at BMW don't test "EVERYTHING" before releasing their updates. Either that or they knew it broke the Welcome Light functionality but felt the other enhancements/bug fixes in this version were worth bricking other functionality/options. Typical crap for the IT Industry!

Something small but my welcome lights were not working and after a bit of troubleshooting i realized it wss due to the interior lights being switched off (i had disabled them the week before by holding down middle dome light for over 3 seconds)

Small chance but worth a try.

Correct. I have tried it a few times. Closing trunk and while trunk is closing running away from the car doesn't close the doors 2 of 3 times.
