M50i or not

Went in for a 4.0 with the M package and am now lusting after the X5 M50i. Price point and fuel economy aside, how many people did upgrade to the M and for what reason. I have to admit that the 4.0 is a great engine and after driving the M I am not so sure which model to go for.

So let me know what to take into consideration since I am ready to strike a deal in December.

If you plan to fully load the 40i, go for M50i

Have you test driven the V8TT 50i?? It’s in another zip code of performance. Those that test drove one will find the money to buy one so be warned. That’s not saying the 40i is slow because it isn’t but the 50i is a monster. The power/torque jump from 60mph up to triple digits will amaze you. 70mph feels laughably slow and you will be blipping the throttle to 100mph+ all the time. The only down side is the 50i driving at slow speeds feels like a dog on a chain that wants to run and can be frustrating in traffic. The exhaust note alone is worth the admission cost.

I just got back from driving it tonight, hence the conundrum....I was not in the market for it at all! Need to sleep over it and maybe drive the 4.0 in a couple of days once more. Thanks!

I can also confirm that anything M for X5 is not being produced right now, so I would need to buy from the lot for December.

Did you get a chance to try it in “sport+“ ??

Your doomed. Power corrupts and the 50i is as practical of a muscle SUV you can get. It still is a reliable cross country rig yet can be driven in mixed weather. Anything higher performance and you get low hanging radiators, performance summer tires and track suspension.

okay can we please not say 4.0i or 5.0i it's 40i/50i seeing how these aren't engine displacements.

Anyway, the 50i/M50i is an amazing grand touring SUV and worth every penny when optioned correctly. don't get the sir suspension, DHP is the only way one should be experienced if you care about handling. While this might seem harsh, drive both and you won't be questioning the above.

Touché. I am still used to the old BMWs and nomenclature.

I know for sure the M Package in not being produced unlit next year.

Just ordered the M50i. My wife has an M850i and she was handing my ass to me constantly when we were driving somewhere separately and I was in my '18 35d. She usually falls way back intentionally and then blasts by me while the oil burner is redlined.
Emasculation led to the M50i. She reviewed the 0-60 comparison to ensure she would still retain some advantage. I was allowed to proceed.

Thank you to Auricom for all of his help on this purchase!!

Any reasons why? Parts? Running out of the blue brakes?

2NH M Sport brakes are a separate option. Perhaps shortage of 715 Aerodynamic kit which 40i M Sport and M50i share.

Mine is also scheduled for next week. I haven't heard anything about a delay. Maybe he means no new orders.

Leasing the m50i. Love it. Insanely fast and fun to drive but very smooth and controlled on local roads. I had a 40i vase model loaner when I swapped my tires. I would never go back to the 40i after being in my m50i. It just felt more like a really nice Honda as opposed to a power house like my current m50i. Even the finishes are above and beyond. If money isn't an issue you'll love the m50i. DHP makes this huge vehicle feel like a regular sedan. It's quite remarkable and often feels like it's defying physics. I drove 40i without DHP. 50i with and without DHP. M50i with and without DHP. The latter offered the best ride and quality imo.

I test drove the 40i with my wife and remember thinking that it was a great ride with plenty of power for our daily commute. Came back another weekend by myself and test drove the 50i. That ruined the 40i for me. After that point I was hell bent on getting the 50i (then the M50i) - took a lot of convincing of the wife to pay the premium for the M50i, but I eventually won out!
