Hi guys
Posting this to help someone who has this problem and need to find the potential fix quickly without digging through hundreds of posts. Have had the most annoying creaking in the rear parcel tray area going over any undulation in the road. Speed bumps etc. Could not figure it out for the life of me. Took it to BMW and they fixed it under warranty. They adjusted the tailgate latch, replaced the lateral tailgate stoppers, replaced top tailgate rubber seal, and lined tailgate with felt tape. Took them a few days to trouble shoot but it’s fixed - all under warranty. Common issue on the X5 as the tailgate has a lot of flex in it. Hope this helps someone! Cheers Zoran |

That last pic of the felt on the leading edge of the top gate is surprising. That area does not make contact with the bottom tail gate. The fat rubber seal front of that felt tape is what makes contact with the bottom gate. If the area on the top gate where they put felt tape were making contact with the bottom gate, that would mean it was metal-on-metal contact and it would have made obvious paint damage to both gates.

the Vortex of dirt, wind driven rain, etc makes it to the top hatch and bottom.......
I would not want porous felt on either....and just have the OE weatherstrip there. How often do you clean your cars. If *not often*, take a paper towel and run it against the top rubber after driving in the rain and or the lower door seals. Road film and such always makes it to these area. |
