Is there any way to connect the car to home WiFi directly in hopes that it can download the OTA update directly w/o phone app? Couldn't find anything in vehicle settings...

I am on 2021 update currently and wondering if that is the reason that the latest is not upgrading - being a few versions behind I can only think that the cumulative file size would be large... Although I don't really care about the update since I like the car as it is with 2021, but I plan to get Anti Dazzle coded soon and wanted to not upgrade software thereafter for a bit of time.

Perhaps I should turn off auto d/l of software to phone in the app? Couldn't figure out how to connect the car directly to home WiFi - it will have to be via the inbuilt vehicle SIM.

No, it is not possible to connect to WiFi. The file size should not matter, once BMW chooses yours to get it then it will download.

Keep in mind thought that for reasons unknown, some vehicles just don't get the OTAs. That is why originally BMWNA put out the SIB so dealers could do the install but since it started costing BMWNA so much money they changed it and said if you are on 07/2021.xx or later and you don't get an OTA it is because none is available for the vehicle. Obviously that is not correct but is the stance they have taken.

Understood and thanks! I am still under original warranty and when I bought the vehicle it was on version 2020.xx - so its right back at them because they can't mandate users to have a smartphone or app - and the vehicle never got an OTA directly apart from the 2021.xx for the first time.

but I don't think I am missing anything really except inability to code ASS.

I've had the updated software transferred to the car for a few days now but it would never prompt me that the install was possible. I did everything from parking it level, having it on a trickle charger, engaging the ebrake etc...

It either tells me that it will prompt me when the install is possible or install is possible after the engine has cooled down for 30mins. I would wait for 30mins and the message would just switch back to the first message. I've done 2-3 over the air updates before but this one seems stuck.

Ha, don't hold your breath! I've had it transferred for about a month and it still hasn't prompted me that my install is ready.

it looks that way only because many/most of the updated features and enhancements cater to iDrive 8/8.5, but other minor updates not highlighted can apply to iDrive 7
