HELP: Very bad peeling on 19' leather dash.

Long story short, bought this car with 37k miles a couple months ago for my wife. 2019 X5 40i. Florida car. Drove down to get it, about 7hrs away. Didn't know about the peeling dash until i got there. Bought from a BMW dealer. The dash all along the windshield is peeling and lifting BADLY. The dealer said previous owner submitted a claim to BMW, but wasn't sure what the result was. I went through with the sale because i was assured that the extended warranty i was buying would cover it and my local dealer wouldn't have a prob replacing it.

Fast forward to last week. Bring it into my dealer, and nope. NOT covered under extended warranty, but would be covered if i was still within 36k mile warranty. (1k out, GTFO) So WTF is the point of warranties. Needless to say i'm furious, cause they said it would easily be over 5k to replace. Would not have bought the car if i knew this would be out of pocket.

I'm not paying it obviously. I've reached back out to dealer i purchased it from and they're going to look into previous claim other owner made with BMW. He said they were trying to assemble a Class action lawsuit because it has happened so many times to people w the leather dash option. But I just don't understand how this isn't a TSB?

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. We absolutely love the car otherwise, has all the options i wanted. But just wanted to lean on some buds over here to see if there is any .02 worth sharing.

Thanks!

So just to be clear, you're complaining that BMW won't cover since you are out of warranty? Sucks that this happened, but you are outside the warranty window, so you cannot expect a free replacement.

"....i was assured that the extended warranty i was buying would cover it..." That statement was a bald-faced lie. The FL dealership lied to you to make the sale. Go after them with everything you can muster.

FWIW, this is a super common failure on a lot of vehicles with leather dash boards. My theory is that people use cleaners with surfactants on them that soak through and eat away at the glue.

I'd talk to a local car upholstery shop to see what they can do to help. Sometimes you can just pull the windshield and reglue it down.

At a minimum, if there was a previous claim for the dash it should show that the issue existed during the warranty period, so the mileage consideration shouldn't matter as much. Was the vehicle CPO? Why didn't the selling dealer fix it before offering it for sale?

You received a bunch of bad information. There is no such thing as a 36k mile warranty is you didn't miss out on anything there. The new vehicle warranty is 4yrs/50k miles so you have been out of warranty for awhile.

As far as the Vehicle Service Contract goes, unfortunately if you don't have it in writing that the dealer assured you it will be covered you don't have a leg to stand on. Actually even if you do have it in writing it probably would be worth nothing except a little leverage in trying to get them to help.

Looks like your dealer is one that will say anything for a sale and anything afterwards. We have not see the peeling dash as a common issue. My best advice would be to take it to a local shop and see what type of repair/covering they can do as you will not get anything out of BMW or the dealer.

Danpaw , I am complaining because I was told one thing, and encountered another and am just looking for some advice. The warranty I purchased was described to me as the exact warranty you get when its brand new. So. There's the rub. Clearly it is not.

If anyone told you that then they knew they were lying. Did you not read it prior to signing?

Wow that is horrible. You can always sue them in small claims court, costs next to nothing to file. They may settle or pay half to avoid the hassle and costs to defend themselves in the lawsuit.

Q: How do you know a dealer is lying?
A: His lips are moving.

Never thought I'd be the "I'm gonna sue you" guy. Ha. I'd really hope there can be some sort of resolution prior to that. But maybe it'll come to that. Thank you all for your input. It's surprising that it is as bad as it is, and not a more frequent problem.

Leather dashes have been and still are a problem especially in hot climates parking outdoors in the sun without a windshield sunshade.

Holy shit, I wouldn’t purchase a vehicle that looks like that no matter how reassuring the dealership was that it would be covered. Only way would have been for them to fix it on the spot. That looks terrible. Sorry that your in the situation you are in though…

Listen up: anyone with a leather dash MUST use a quality windshield shade regularly (summer or winter) and treat it with a good leather conditioner.

Dont treat it with anything.

The leather dashboards on the X5 are NOT leather. They're sensafin vinyl. Wife it off with a damp microfiber and nothing more. If you really feel the need to do something, MAYBE some 303 uv protectant once a year to so.

Agreed. I'd tell them to fix it and deliver it to me for the inconvenience of them not doing it before I made the trip down.

OP - I would really go after the dealer - there is nothing to lose really except some time. Squeaky wheel gets the oil.

This is not correct. The leather dashboard is Nappa leather.
