It depends on which version of the socket you have. Originally, the one supplied did (it was on my 2021 until I had it swapped), but people sometimes had an issue with having various plugs fitting. There are two different specs…the original one was the slightly smaller diameter one (more common in Europe), but if you had issues, BMW would swap it out for the other style which does not have an illuminated ring around it. The issue with the slightly smaller diameter one was many plugs have a flare on the outer end which would prevent the plug from going into the socket far enough for the center contact to make the connection. Their first ‘fix’ was to substitute that center contact with a screw that had a taller head, but they later swapped it for a socket with a larger version of the two specifications.

My socket is whatever came with the car, I guess it’s the smaller diameter one because it does not work with my usb plug, I can see there is a translucent ring but no light, I tested my socket with a meter and I got power.

The 2 version from my understand is smoker package, that comes with lighter is different size than the auxiliary 12V. Most of the old plugs were design to the smoker package outlet, auxiliary is relative new, altho the new accessories work with both. You can dig around parts catalog and see the 2 different ones

However I ordered the Ainope USB C plug and it works perfectly. In addition a 90 degree angle adapter and a short cable for the phone. Ainope plug angle adapter Cable This way the cup holders are not impacted and with everything I still can close the sliding lid. |

The socket with an illuminated ring requires 2 lines, one to power the socket, the other to power the LED ring which is part of the circuit for the dash lights. For some reasons, BMW decided to put in a non-illuminated translucent ring on the 2024 X5/X6. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not a big deal, I will just buy an Ainope low profile plug with illuminated USB outlets and leave it plugged in at all time. Meanwhile I will look for another USB plug with a ring light, preferably with an orange glow to blend with the BMW vibe.
