Exhaust Crackles and Pops

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I kind of miss the crackles and pops from the exhaust that my previous X3 M40i had. I wonder why the M5 has it and the X5M doesn't?

Since approx 07/2019 its removed because of emissions.

So if somebody has been lucky and has older model, they had better sound and crackles :-/

I hope akrapovic will make some way..

Can someone confirm this? I believe this was the case for EU F90 models but not US models.. Does F95/96 not sound like F90 with pops and crackles? If so, I may have to cancel my order..

Then you better cancel. I knew that while waiting for my car to be built, but I still liked most everything else about the car that I still got it.

Be advised that BMW, without advising USA dealerships of the changes for MY 2021, deleted the alcantara sunroof shade and replaced it with a cheap cloth/vinyl shade like they use on the lower series vehicles. They also deleted the music hard drive.

Thanks for the input.. I was really looking forward to the exhaust note as I enjoyed the one on my F90 especially with aftermarket exhaust. Not having it will be tough pill to swallow.. I can cancel no problem even after vehicle is delivered so no issues there.. The trouble is finding a vehicle of such caliber in that specific height.. it needs to fit under my lift and x6m is perfect fit.. I want an suv as it best suits my daily needs.

It kind of sucks that I had a 2015 335i with M Performance exhaust that had super loud burbles and pops and then I bought an F10 M5 expecting louder and NOTHING. 2017 F85 only pops on upshifts at high RPMS, nothing on downshifts. Sucks again.

I really don't think we should have to spend 4500-7k on an aftermarket exhaust that gives us the sound that a 2020 M340i has....

I still bought one and isn't end of world, but I really wish it did have an AMG/Porsche sports exhaust. Especially since the Comp model I bought has the "sports/competition" exhaust.

I agree. Also if the F90 M5 had the same lack of crackles & pops like our X5M's, I could kind of understand it. But since the F90 sounds pretty good, this just doesn't seem right. Even the X5 M50i sounds better.

It makes zero sense that even the new M550, M440, M340 etc have crackles and pops and our actual M's dont.. kinda makes me upset but who cares, I'd rather have the actual M.

Agreeed. Not sure why the M8 and M5 sound similar but our vehicles do not compare even though we all share the S63.
There is a thread over on the M8 forum where member vic55 pulled the resonator and replaced with straight pipes and noticed an increase in pops and overall tone by about 30%. Thinking about trying this on my X5M.

I actually don't miss the crackles from my F80. I like the way the car sounds. Especially on cold start.

Different buyers demographics for X5M than m340i, majority of X5M buyers don't want pops and crackles.

Then the same would hold true for the M5. Yet its exhaust sounds great.

I have driven 2019 m340i with the mperf and compared to mine m540i it sucks super hard.

My x5mc is perfect.... except the sound. Cold start and driving in slow speed is superb, like the sound but when I push it slightly faster or kickdown... its like the same during low speed, only more sound in speakers, in exhaust not, i open all windows and roof and it has no spice.

My m540i was super loud compared to it and also had shots in exhaust which I also miss.

Will see with what the akrapovic comes but as i understand no more cracks in aftermarket also (EU f.... restrictions).

I am a bit sad because the sound is one of the main thing I have been looking forward.

Low speed / garage x5mc
Mid speed and highspeed the m540i like 5x louder + shoots in exhaust.

So sad.. hoped it will be louder as bmw expert told me during my delivery.

Ye but u gonna lose the f... guarantee

I discussed it in remus and they said - they are not sure when and if the supp x5mc also but m3 and m4 they will
and also they will got 3 stages.. 2 of them will be with homologation + guarantee but the 3rd one losing guarantee :-/ And I am afraid, as they described, the only one would be interresting, the one u lose the guarantee because they remove opf filter + add cracks.
Btw u must after every service visit go in remus to programm cracks again :-/
