Winter tires
Hi,
I have the M package x5 which comes with the 275/40 R21 fronts and 315/35 R21 backs. It also has the optional M brakes. I wanted to see what are my options for winter tires or wheel and tire set. Also, what is the smallest shell size I can go down to with these brakes? thanks |

Most folks get 20" wheels for their winter set, they are less expensive and have a much bigger selection of tires.

You can go as low as 19", if you wish.

Blizzaks are great in the snow but on dry roads there are Bouncy like a basketball I got tired of changing tires over the years. I live in West Virginia in Canada. You would need them straight through winter. I would always change them in and out got tired of it parked the BMW and bought a truck for the winter. problem solved no more changing tires. our winners consist of 51 day 20 to the next day. We haven’t had snow since 2015 in the mountains yes but where I live no .

I wouldn't go with anything less than 20" with the m sport brakes. On 19" rims the distance from the edge of the calipers to the barrel of the wheel is extremely thin. The 19" wheels I had were sheets of paper close. I went with 20" rims and blizzacks factory size. They ride fine. The only difference I can feel is of course the blizzacks are soft and have deep tread so they are a little mushy/squirmy feeling, but it's no big deal.

And search for wheels by the specs instead of by car. The wheels I bought were listed for an audi. But they fit perfect. 20x9, 33mm offset, 66.45 hub. Also, I got them on sale for $99 a wheel, shipped to my house. Lol. They are generic China wheel and I put bmw center caps on them.
You can see tons of wheels available through websites like fitment industries. The only risk is depending on the design if it will clear the brakes ok. I took a chance at $99. Figured I'd make them into some kind of garage art if they didn't fit. https://www.fitmentindustries.com/bu...s-au32-20x9-33 Last edited by crackerjack15; 01-11-2024 at 08:30 PM.. |

Do your research for sure.
BMW 735 wheel gives about 1/16" clearance, so more like a thin cardboard than sheet of office paper, but depends on what you are comfortable with. |

A lot of great suggestions. I think I will go with 20 inch wheels. I did some research and these are my observations:
America's tire had wheels, but they required spacers to properly fit on the car which I am not a fan of. Ideally, I want to get BMW wheels, but can't justify the cost (as they seem 3x from other wheels) considering they will be used for a few months a year. I will look around at other sites to see what is else is available. Any suggestions on brands that are reputable and work? |

I just bought a set of 19" wheels for winter tires. I also looked into 20" wheels.
20" Style 748M runs about $800 each. 20" Style 738 runs about $730 each. As a point of comparison, Velox Wheels (sold by Costco) has a 20" suitable for winter at $290. (Offset is 40, so I don't think it needs spacers.) Not quite 3x, but close. Though out of state dealers typically don't charge tax and some have free shipping. That might close the difference a bit. Shop BMW USA has 20" BMW Winter Wheel Set, Style 748M in Black with Pirelli Scorpion Winter R-F for a bit over $4k. Comes with center caps and TPMS. It might still be in stock, so you can get a dealer to order (or assemble) that for you. If you're a Costco member, you can try you luck at the dealer with the 15% discount on parts through their auto program. In my shopping for this season, that would be the best deal for winter tires with OEM wheels... assuming you are okay with the Scorpion Winter run flats. |
