umm, there isn't a preheating element for the 45e's high voltage battery. if you're talking about climatizing, that's just heating or cooling the cabin.

I asked the sales agent specifically about this as its kind of a thing for good mpg. In cold climate. Without preheat it wont run in EV only for my short commutes if below 0C. (Audi) and thats kind of annoying. However seen from some of the threads on this forum that it doesnt have preconditioning of the HV battery but havent really dug into it. If it is true the sales guy flat out lied

Ive heard EV only is possible to as low as - 10C, but ofcourse there might be some safety meassures that force the ICE to fire up to avoid too rough cold starts. Btw. Manual doesnt say much but foumd this.:

I'm loving my 45e. I have a mix of daily 10 mile commutes, and driving to the cottage a couple of times a month (~250 miles). The commutes are almost entirely electric, except when you floor the accelerator. The electric drive is extremely smooth and quiet. No problems with the gas drive either. The scheduled cabin pre-heating for commutes is luxurious and addictive, especially for someone like me who has to park outside in the snow. No regrets here!

more than 3000 miles now. 2 times visited gas station. Driving about 30 miles a day in electric mode only on suburban roads 20-60mph.
Car is great for my family and for me its no brainer over 40i: it's cheaper after tax deductions, faster and no visits to gas stations. And If we want to take a long trip I know I don't need to plan stops for recharge @ |

The gas engine is noticeably more efficient than the 8-cyl 5.7L Grand Cherokee that I used to drive (which averaged 15 mpg), so it's still a win. |

i am interested next summer when my lease is up. my daily commute is less than 2 miles one way. i reside in Houston and most of what I do on the daily is "inside the loop" so this vehicle would be a great fit. curious what they will offer in 21 and 22 models.

wheels? when i ordered with 21" wheels, they were style 741M. 275/40R21 in front, 315/35R21 in rear, Hankook S1 evo3 summer performance run flats. 22" wheels aren't offered on the 45e in the US, though i believe some have installed them after the fact (both OEM and aftermarket).
if u meant MY21/MY22 models, i'm sure component supplies (rather, lack of...) will dictate offerings. Last edited by nZtiZia; 03-31-2021 at 10:46 AM.. |

I've had mine for about 5 weeks and have put 700 miles on her. We did a 300 mile round-trip the day after she came back from getting PPF/ceramic. I used the on-board navigation and the adaptive mode which lets the car determine, based on the route, when to use electric and the avg. MPG for that trip was 32. Not bad for a 2.5 ton SAV. Since then we've driven her in mostly electric and the avg. mpg since new is 40. I filled the tank after that trip and it's still full after almost a month. I'm not a big fan of RF tires either, but the air suspension smoothes them out nicely. I got our's with the 20" rims due to wanting all-season tires and I have no regrets on that decision. As for performance, it's pretty quick when I want it to be. That being said, with the motor being detuned from the normal horsepower available in the 40i, and the added weight of the battery, take the battery down to zero and there is a slight difference in performance between the 45e and the 40i. Not enough for me to want the 40i though. Plus with the tax credits/rebates from federal/state/city it's cheaper to buy than the 40i. Not sure about leasing. I love the car and, so far, I am certain we made the right decision for our needs.

I've had my 45e for just over 5 months, about 4500 miles thus far. Use it for daily around-town driving, maybe once a week to go somewhere 20-50 miles from home, and then 1-2x per month to drive to our place in the mountains for skiing, about 92 miles one way.
The 45e has returned 66 eMPG so far. The current tank is 7/8 full and has over 500 miles driven since filling. For anyone who doesn't drive more than ~50 miles a day on a daily basis, I simply cannot see where the 40i would be better. This PHEV is simply incredible, and a massive improvement over the F15 40e. (We had a 2017). I have the 21" wheels with summer tires and purchased a set of 20" wheels and mounted dedicated winter tires. The 21's look 10x better than the 20's, but running summer rubber here in CO is not an option if you want to use the vehicle in winter months.

You can read all about it in the ST2005 G05 PHEV Complete Vehicle manual. "TheG05PHEV, like the BMW Hybrid Generation 3.0 iPerformance vehicles, deploys a refrigerant circuit to cool the vehicle interior and the high-voltage battery unit. The air conditioning condenser from the predecessor has been replaced by theestablishedcoolant-cooled air conditioning condenser." |

Sounds good! Been a nuisance with th diesel ICE insisting on firing up below 0C for a short trip to the store etc. Especially as its below that for about 5 months here

BMW puts a battery heater in their BEVs, but it seems there is not one in their PHEVs. Cooling is, IMHO, a requirement on any decent EV, and it does have that. I'd be happier if it had a heat pump for cabin preconditioning, as that's more efficient most of the time unless it's too cold, and it needs to use the backup resistance heating, which is, I think, the only heat the 45e has unless the ICE is running.

while i don't experience that extreme where i live and considering the few minor technical glitches i've encountered, i'm heavily invested in my 45e with absolutely no regrets!
