285/35R22 Square Setup on 742M Wheels

This is something I'm considering on the staggered OEM 742M wheels. Tires have a suggested rim width of 9-11" so they should fit the front 9.5x22 and rear 10.5x22. Those that have also done this would you recommend it? Would anyone advise against it?

Did you go with the 285/35R22 squared setup? If so, any issues. I am looking to do the same.

I did not. Have been meaning to update the tires but I guess I've been too afraid of the transfer case boogeyman.

Did the dealer talk you out of it? They were so scared of the rear end and electronics when I approached them, like the boss told them to absolutely do not suggest any changes to wheel and tire size. So I gladly walked out. Looking to others for real world answers now.

On a 2008 e90 M3 I went from staggered to square. My 2013 f10 535 xdrive came with a square set up. I was researching going from staggered to square on my G01 30i but moved over to my current G05 (which came with a square set up (thankfully)). Still I am researching square wheel set ups to augment the look of my x5 and am considering using 2 front wheels from an X5m to achieve the look Im after and the feel of a square set up.

You definitely want a wheel width that properly accommodates the tire width (unless you want the stretched wheel look a lot of young car enthusiasts love), but that proves that tires can be narrower, much narrower than the wheel.

These AWD in our G05's or any AWD BMW (hell, even RWD) systems are hugely sensitive to changes in overall wheel diameter which affects wheel speed. The car uses wheel speed for ABS, traction and stability control (all which have an effect on how the transfer cases or differentials split/shift power for traction) . If the wheel diameter is outside an acceptable threshold, that's when issues arise.

On an side note, Once owned an Airstream Interstate that is built on a Mercedes 3500 sprinter chassis. I had a tire inflation differential issue and one time and it faulted the entire ABS and stability control system. Inflated to proper and equal pressures all around and the problem went a way.

Something I've been intending to understand, that is not simply swapping tires, but also navigating iDrive to change tire setups. What does this do exactly? Is this telling the transfer case I've swapped from my OEM 22" to OEM 20" wheels, and vice versa? I ask because there is also an option for "other tires" with no specific size requirement in place with that selection. What does this tell the car then regarding transfer case, ABS, etc?

I had to change the tire/wheel config on my X3 when I would swap winter tires on and off the car. My winter tires were the same wheel style, tire size and staggered, just like the summer tires.

In terms of winter vs. summer tires, winter tires, because of their design, lower pressures and have a lower top speed and suspect it may warn the driver if the winter tire speed threshold is exceeded. I never tested the top speed of my winters.

So the adjustment in iDrive is only a TPMS configurator?

I installed 285/35R22 tires on all four corners yesterday. I configured the iDrive to think it's on the stock 275/45R20 tires. There is only a 0.2" diameter difference between the tire sizes. I will let you know if I run into any issues. So far all is good.

I believe it should be OK. Let us know if all works out fine.

I am thinking of doing the same on 285/40/21 tires on all four 21x9.5 wheels.

I'm thinking of doing the 285/35/22 set up on my 22x9 inch wheels once they come in. Interested if you had any issues at all.

Thanks

I am not sure what exactly does, on the technical side, but I also adjusted the iDrive when I swapped Summer - Winter to Summer...which I just switched to last week.
