One would think if BMW is aware of the issue and it is a major one then they would be implementing the fix on the newly build cars or they would just halt 45e production until they have a fix in place.

Exactly, new builds are always immune from recalls (or they're not built/delivered), but, of course, BEVs/PHEVs/MHEVs in general will always be more vulnerable to recalls as it's tricky tech because it's new.

I thought they were using the same set up as the 745e (just larger battery packs)? That has been out for over a year. It is concerning that all these issues are cropping up once US sales started, wonder if the line is moving too quickly and quality control is suffering?

Well I meant "new" in the haven't-been-doing-this-20-years sense. New assembly lines, new suppliers and/or new demand on those suppliers, new models (which includes 45e differences between the EU and NA), etc. That's a lot of new models, tech, assembly, config, etc.

My understanding is the batteries are Samsung batteries and the PHEV tech is toyota, so in theory that's been around for awhile, but the applications and assembly would be new.

The "impurities in the battery" could be worrisome as this can be the thing that starts fires: essentially the impurities can form little stalactites which grow between the plates and once they get big enough to punch through they short circuit the battery. To be clear I have absolutely no idea if that's what's going on here, just expanding on a post I read that mentioned the recall may be due to battery impurities.

Sorry, I was trying to clarify if it was the same system. I agree they haven't been doing PHEVs for 20 years, but they have been doing them long enough that these sorts of issues are concerning. Was the hybrid tech something they got in the deal for doing the Supra? I hadn't looked into it enough to see where they had sourced the powertrain components.

This has nothing to do with the tech.
My guess is substandard quality control. Like the hood of my car is completely misaligned. I totally don't get it that this can leave a factory.

And a lazy ass welding robot that leaves welding beads on the battery
Not to mention the wrinkles

Funny, same here. I'm currently driving a temporary X3 which needs maintenance, and I scheduled that maintenance for the day that I was supposed to pick up my new X5. Delivery of the X5 has been postponed, but the X3 is still scheduled for the maintenance. Advantages:
1) I'm seeing the dealer and I can ask for more info, typically people tend to tell you more when you are face to face.
2) while I'm there, I can go see my new X5 and start drooling. And probably right after that I'll start crying

On at least one of the problems, it was a QA/QC issue where the welds in the battery compartment were not ground down, leaving a potential sharp point that could pierce a battery under some circumstances. Charging the batteries warms them, and they expand a bit.

found this document on FB group "BMW X5 45e"
seems to be an internal email regarding the PHEV recall.
Quality is not the best, but I was able to read it :-)

I just received a partial update from my dealer in BE. They mentioned that not all vehicles recalled are automatically affected. The check will happen back in Zeebrugge. This means that if your car is already at the dealer, it needs to be transferred back by truck... This is usually happening gradually. No clear prio defined. Since the solution has not yet been communicated internally, it can take weeks to check/solve. In the meantime, they’ll provide mobility solution. OK,... I’ll accept a temporary M4 please 😉

Reminds me of this event below, their conclusion wasn't very satisfactory IMO. Owner was a forum member. Haven't seen him around after this. Have you seen @FilipVDA lately? I wonder if there was NDA involved!

for what it's worth, mine was affected by the first recall program (bad welding) and got tested OK at Zeebrugge. The car got discharged on Aug 24th and I took delivery of it on Sep 11th...

Just came back from my dealer. No news really, no complaints whatsoever about the dealer (they were really helpful) but it seems they are also stuck between a rock and a hard place. They had not received further instructions from BMW besides "don't release the new cars and ask everyone else to stop using their battery" and I have no reason to believe they were holding anything back.

This is also consistent with the document posted earlier by Rosso77 , the answer on Q8 ("The remedy is currently being developed") is not very reassuring.

The worst thing is that my car is there, on the parking lot, waiting for me .

Guess I'll have to be patient... breathe in ... breathe out ....

So I'm still scheduled for pick up of my 45e tomorrow morning. So far, no word from the dealer, but I guess it's just a matter of time. I think I can rule out the dealer having checked the car already and gotten a clear..

Same with my dealer and my car which will be stopped in Zeebrugge for repairs.

Just out of sheer curiosity to our Belgian fellow sufferes - what is there in Zeebrugge that your dealer with repair shop cannot do / verify?

If your car needs to be transport back from Vienna to Zeebrugge it will a longer trip as our Belgian friends. I hope for you it is ok.
