I downsized from 21s to 20s. Noticed a lot less road noise especially at highway speed, more compliant ride, reduced steering effort in parking maneuvers, and lower step in height. I miss how the 21s felt going around freeway ramps, very planted feel with no lean. I am very glad that I downsized. I think the 740m wheels look pretty good. It is only from the rear that I think it looks a little disappointing.

Yes, the rear.. that's the only thing that's pushing me to go for 21/22, but I decided to stick with 20. So it was harder for you to park in 21s? How much difference do you feel going around ramps from 21 to 20? I'm assuming 741 to 740?

It took slightly more steering effort to turn the wheel. I am assuming because of the wider contact patch but not a big deal really and I got used to it quickly. I loved how flat the X5 felt going around corners when on 21s. Very noticeable improvement. That said, I did not care for the extra tire noise and the sharper impacts over road imperfections.

Outside the US the 20s come as a staggered wheel set. In the US, we get a square set up. Staggered might be a nice compromise as it looks better from the rear but you still get the 20" diameter.
