Clearing the 'Replace Battery' Message

Unfortunately, I've fallen prey to the 'Replace Battery' message after having PPF installed on my X5 (which took about 1 week). I'm sure the battery is functioning just fine and that this is just a software issue.

My question is, how do you clear the message in Diagnostic Mode? I've read that someone was able to do this, but the message just came back. I wanted to try and clear the message and see if it goes away for good for my vehicle.

Any help appreciated!

There is an App called BimmerLink (related to BimmerCode), and this allows you to install a new battery and/or clear any battery errors.

Why installing PPF cause this battery error message? Do they need to disengage the battery?

I have an appointment to install PPF on mine in September. Hope my installer knows about this potential issue and how to fix it.....

Quite a few folks have gotten that message after tinting/ppf presumably due to the installers keeping the doors open for a long time/constantly opening them. Some folks have even taken it back to the dealer and gotten a new battery. I believe some said the message went away after awhile with the battery being back to fully charged.

Rather than leaving the doors open (I checked my app when they were installing it, and after a day's worth of work they always closed all doors, hood, and trunk), the issue may be that they leave the key inside and do not lock the car, leaving the system running. I would suggest to your installer that they close all doors, hood, and trunk, and take the key out of the vehicle and lock it. This may not be possible depending on what they were working on when closing the shop.

That 60+ page thread regarding Bimmercode is daunting.... do you know which adapter will allow me to clear this message, in addition to all the other common codes users use?

Here is the list of supported adapters. I, and many others here, use the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth and it works well for coding and I assume it will for clearing codes also.

I didn't see a particular command on Bimmercode that says to clear codes (I'm using OBD), but I did change the auto start-stop code, and it cleared all codes after, then the replace battery message returned......

I'm trying hard not to bring it into the dealer if you haven't noticed!

Bimmerlink will clear the error. You just need to purchase the app, since you have already a working adapter with Bimmercode. No need for additional adapter.

Nope, could not figure out how to clear the code with either Bimmercocde or Bimmerlink. I'm convinced that there is no way to clear the 'Replace Battery' message unless the dealer physically changes the battery, even though the battery is fine...

You're in for a new battery, msg is coming back because something happened inside of battery, when drained low.
If your warranty is less than one year old, dealer should replace it at no charge.

My last resort is to fully charge the battery using a NOCO battery tender. I'm thinking that even with driving, the battery may not be 100% charged. If this tender can charge to 100%, perhaps it can clear the message. If not, off to the dealer I go because I have tried everything!

I'm having the same problem after my car was wrapped. Please report back if charging the battery solves the issue.

Try picking up a ctek 5.0 battery tender to see if it can bring the battery up to spec. Several of us have this unit and works on the X5. It took mine almost 2 days to go into trickle charge mode.

Currently I have a NOCO Genius 5 hooked up to the battery at my parents' where I have access to a driveway and plug-in outlet. It will be charging for about 14-hours. When I left, 3 of 4 bars were lit up. I'll report back tomorrow to see if the juice indicator is full and whether the message went away!

Battery was fully charged per the NOCO Genius 5, and the message was STILL there. Off to the dealer I go....

Update: went to the dealer yesterday and they confirmed that the battery was defective. They replaced it and the message finally went away...
