Defective Rear Differential
Had my 2022 X5MC serviced at 10K miles today; an oil change and microfilter replacement.
Tech noticed a defective rear differential and SA recommended immediate replacement (luckily, under warranty) I was taken inside the shop and shown a loose driveshaft movement; that is the tech is able to slightly wiggle the driveshaft... Is this movement normal? Is there a known differential issue with the F95? I searched the forum and can't find any info that points to such issue... Last edited by S2000M5; 04-04-2024 at 02:15 PM.. |

I don't think I read of any rear diff failures on the F95. Did you notice any noise from back there? Wiggling seems more like it might be the flexible disc at the end of the propeller shaft. And at only 10K, that sounds hard to believe. Unless heavy use of launch control was used?

I did not launch the car even once... Is the disc you are referring to supposed to be flexible? I am trying to asses if a replacement is even necessary...is the dealer just being cautious? |

This is an interesting development, one that will get a lot of folks attentions, would be interested in knowing which part they replaced for a fix once you get the invoice--unless they are really replacing the whole thing. Thanks for posting

The SA said the noise is coming from driveshaft internal gears. Not going to hear it as much when inside the car and will continue to worsen over time. I can't hear anything but there is a very slight jolt when coming to almost a complete stop and then driving off which kinda make sense if the linkage of the driveshaft and the differential is loose, as shown by the tech. Going to try and take a video when she goes backk next week... |

https://concreateusa.egnyte.com/dl/kqYpc6FUQ4 https://concreateusa.egnyte.com/navi...b-a447bc2daa24 SA said this morning they replaced rear diff for X4, M5 as well... Also mentioned that it gets worse over time and better handled under warranty... |

Too soon for a failed guibo (hard rubber disc between driveshaft and diff flange. Sort of a softish hockey puck). That takes many years of heat exposure for cracks to form around the integral bolt sleeves.
I couldnt open videos. A little movement is normal, but it should not be anything significant. Certainly no clunking! Can’t say I have ever heard of a M diff failure. Perhaps there was a loss of fluid along the way? Maybe run-in service wasn’t done right? I lost a xfer case to a gasket leaking oil, but that manifested like a misfire as the toasted clutch packs struggled to transmit torque. There are clutch packs in the M diff as well to send power appropriately. Good to hear it was replaced!

Def can hear the clunking sound on both, more on the second one of course.
