I've posted my thoughts/concerns about the issues with the honeycomb/plastic fatigue and entailment to repair should it break...

Installed my Sly Bracket with the leveling bracket. The leveling bracket is not fixed tight but simply just held in place with tension. The bottom is 1/8" level - away from the bottom of the bumper.

I can easily see if driving in snow, park, etc - it can easily move the level so that it tilts inward and may scratch anything behind it.

The top of the plate is just flush right below the front plastic trim. This is without a license plate frame

Mulling but I think I might just double sticky the plate .....to the center

VHB works just fine dead center...

I have been thinking about this.....kinda used to seeing the crappy tow mounts on all cars , half of them lopsided vertical...

We go through the trouble of offsetting it for what *reason* vs. being center.
Kinda one of those philosophical moments maybe - in which I've been thinking about it.

Right now, mine is aft rightsize, with the sly bracket. Haven't gotten around to it but may just take the stock holder, VHB it and then put the plate in stock center location.

The way the SLY bracket holder is, it's actually tensioned/supporting on the *L* covering 3 honeycombs, so it's not that bad on how the tension is spread I suppose

The post of the zip ties on the mesh honeycomb seems like a good solution

It looks so -zip tied- from far away as you can see it's slanted...

I'd rather have the OEM mount where it's at least it's straight and vert

Agree. It's either no plate at all or plate in the spot where the designers intended it to be.

Drill that bumper, baby!

I have 2023 X5 40i M Sports

Could someone please let me know how much clearance should the plate be from sensors before plate starts interfering the sensors' functionality?

Thanks!

My plate does not interfere at all with the sensors.. parking or otherwise including the Assisted Drive Pro. It's about a 1/2 from the frame and 3/4 inch from center sensor.

I just tried it this weekend. It is a good concept but I would describe it as flimsy.

The brackets are easy to bend and will most likely flex a lot when driving, causing the plate to rub against the bumper, if you mount it in an upward position - which is exactly what you are trying to avoid. Sure you could attach rubber bumpers to the back of the plate. But if you live in the north with ice and snow, I can see it bending downward if snow or ice slide off the front of your hood.

So I got the Carbonio No-Drill license plate mount.

I don't have adaptive cruise, but I ordered that version, as I would like it to be generally in the position the OEM BMW mount would be, on the bumper.

I'm generally happy with it, appears to be good quality and adjustable with regard to the position it attaches to the lower grill (below the bumper), as well as the bracket itself.

I did have one issue, probably operator error (me). Don't slam me, I broke down and went through a touchless car wash - it messy winter in the northeast and handwashing isn't an option on most days, and I can't get appointments at the detailer when I really want a wash. In the touchless wash, the plate mount actually bent forward, with the license plate sticking straight out from the bumper. I'm not sure if the blast of water or the air dryer caused it to bend forward. I was able to remove it and bend it back, by hand, to the normal position and reattach it.

while one could say that shows the ‘low quality’ of that metal, it could actually be purposeful. it the metal were harder/firmer, what would end up giving in? the grille, which is a much more expensive piece to replace!

So I had my first “snow” experience with carbonio and the same issue. Apparently snow slid off the hood, down the grill and bent the carbonio 90-degrees, sticking out straight. It was mounted, angled slightly towards the bumper with the rubber bumper feet touching the bumper.

So I’m done with these screw on, no show, no drill contraptions. Sto n sho, Carbonio and a no-name item from an Amazon retailer.

Next time I’m at the dealer for service I’ll just have them put on the standard oem bmw plate holder.
