in sum: You could have told me the massaging seats in the M50i came with a happy-ending and I'd still be in an F95 (Lord Willing). It looks, sounds and drives better (to me) and it's easily discernible to true Bimmer fans that it's another level of a car. Sure it's got the same engine or whatever but all the technical stats don't really matter (except horsepower and such -- to me). The (non-literal) ///M Competition Badge does though.

I considered both cars when shopping. My local dealer had an M50i with a similar spec to what I liked and I was close to pulling the trigger. Ultimately, I ended up going with an F95. It came purely down to aesthetic for me. Well that and being the BAMF with an X5MC. Plus I wanted the Sakhir Orange interior, seats and mirror caps. Overall, IMHO, just a better looking and feeling car. I like waking the neighbors when it cranks up.

Call me vain. Call me conceited. Call me pretentious. The monikers all fit and I'm not ashamed at all. I worked hard to get to a point where I'm blessed enough to afford the car I wanted so I got it. The F95 is just an overall better car. Period. Full stop.

M50i owners can try as they might to say it's the same car less the extra horsepower, seats and moldings. Once BMWNA agrees I'll retract my previous statements.

Thank you very much!

same principle as the M550 vs. M5.

Mc version is just a sharper instrument. Worthy of 30k+ more? Dealers choice.

BMW designed the M-performance N63 engine + chassis really close to the M version. The transformation occurred when the M850i was launch with the HP bump.

Awaiting retraction!

Per BMWNA:

But now it just feels awkward.

Not sure I see what you're slapping your dick on the table about here. They're adjacent on the website. Note the descriptions though:

The F95 is described, by the manufacturer mind you, as "Powerful vehicles delivering peak performance for sport-minded drivers"

The M50i is described, again, by the MaNUfaCtuRer, as "Enhanced performance and design, engineered by BMW M."

I would posit that the operative word in those descriptions is "ENHANCED" which, to even those of us with even the most elementary of edu-muh-kay-shuns, would invariably signify that M50i is merely a base model X5 using a Swedish Made Penis Enlarger. Juxtapose that against the F95 which was born with 12-inches of Alabama Blacksnake. Sure they're both hung low, but one of these things is not like the other.

True Bimmer fans know the difference between an ///M-Enhanced car and an ///M-Car. That's not me shitting on M-Sport or M50i's. I just think they are different cars.

The price difference alone is just further proof positive of the difference. Simply stated: You could buy every single non-electric Hyundai with the approx. $31,300 price difference between an X5MC and an M50i. Obviously, BMW feels a bit different about the two conveyances.

Don't get me wrong, NOTHING wrong with an M50i or a Hyundai or a bus pass, I've had all of the above. But in the spirit of argument, the F95 is better.

Just because I'm an asshole. Here's more proof that BMW doesn't consider the M50i as a true ///M-Car.

https://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/m-models.html

Notice the M50i is conspicuously missing.

GIF time!

You may be emotionally over-invested in this.

by "may" I mean absolutely are.

Do you ask the 911 guys why buy a turbo S when the turbo is the same thing with a tune and slightly bigger brakes?

Anyway, I don't think anyone really cares except the ones that know what //M is. The soccer moms at the schools just see another x5.

Definitely appreciate seeing the passionate thread though. However, I think most of us with the F95/96 are way past that point in life of having to justify anything to anyone. We are well off enough to purchase the best in this category of car and just don't really care what the specs are.

You'll see this "psychological difference in attitude" just by reading the M3/4 forums vs the M5/8 forums.

Mostly agree, though I do care about specs because "best" means "best for me" ... if I just wanted to pay a bunch of money for "the best" in the SUV category and didn't care about the specs I'd look at:

• AMG G63
• Maybach GLS
• Range Rover
• Urus
• Bentayga
• Cullinan

Those are all at least 30k more than the X5M and many in the 200-300s (or more?) ... the X5M is only $10k more than a 50i ... I mean great, but uhhhh ...

Let's face it - nobody with the means & desire to buy "the best" is buying a BMW.

Not necessarily. There's a few reasons why I didn't go for the other SUVs and here are mine:

I've always hated MB interior vs BMW.
I was considering a RR but it was boring, no re-design and plagued with gremlins.

Urus/bent - would've loved but wife said no.

Maybach/Cullinan- is just a different league of rich (at least for me).

Exactly the point: specs / looks / features / value matters.

I like the M50i for the IAS, vented/massage seats, Dravit grey ... I like the x5M because it's sharper but ... suv & I'm buying it primarily for road trips so I'm trying to decide if the X5M option-package for $10k is worth giving up that other stuff ... I'm not sure so I'm going to wait for the 2022 info.

I'd look at the G63 but there's a huge waitlist which is the same reason I took the Macan turbo off my list (cayenne not worth it imo).

I think ride quality would be the only Hangup for the X5m. I prefer the M seats but clearly that’s subjective though they are also massaging and vented. I switched to MSS but even then it’s stiffer than I’d like. G63 is is a different world in terms of flashiness and out the door price, I imagine it’s $40k+ more and very flashy. Also not without its ride quality and interior space issues.

Do you know if that's still true? I keep hearing the M seats cut massage & vent due to supply issues ... if there's still vent/massage I think I might go with the X5M - I'd like the IAS but I'm also coming from an M4 comp and am nervous about "aw fuck" once I get a lot of daily hours in.

I'd really like Dravit gray too (M50i only) - it's similar to an ind moonstone M4 I had and that's the the all-time best color I've ever seen on any car. People would yell compliments on the freeway.

I ordered my car in feb and it has them- will have to check the dealer. I have heard you can get dravit for the same price as TBM (I think only extra 2k) as it’s not a true “individual”. Dravit is awesome I was looking at other individual paints but couldn’t stomach the 8+ wk quoted build delay.

Between Dravit and Grigio Telesto I would say Grigio is a much nicer color in person. Dravit has the gold metallic flake look when the sun hits it where as Grigio (i had this on my M3) has more a blue/silver flake in the paint which looks better to me. Also more unique color compared to dravit which is available on other BMW models.

Personally i feel like if you are going to get a M car you might as well get a M specific color too.

The X5M comes with both front seat ventilation and massaging seats standardin the US. I believe BMW, when there was supply issues, cut the lower trim before limiting the full ///M.

I also believe you can only get soft close on the X5M in the X5 lineup or at least that was early this year.

Massage may be gone now, but venting is still around - here's all I can find on the site under X5m standard features & options:
• 18-way power M multi-function front seats including 4-way lumbar support, M logo integrated into the front headrests, and memory system for front seats, steering wheel, and exterior mirror positions

• 3-stage heated front seats

• Heated Front Armrests & Steering Wheel

• Extended Merino Leather
Then the exec package adds:
• Front and Rear Heated Seats

• Front ventilated seats

• Heated and Cooled Cupholders
(thought this was gone??) plus other stuff
So looks like massage is gone for the X5M?

The M50i has standard:
• 20-way power Multi-contour front seats including standard 16-way power seat functions and 4-way lumbar support, with power adjustment functions for shoulder support and thigh support, 2-way manual lateral adjustment for comfort headrest, and seat position memory system for driver and front passenger

tons of other comfort stuff listed not listed in the X5M but it probably has? and then standard

• Front ventilated seats, 3-stage heated front seats

and in "convenience options", the M50i has:

• Front massaging seats
So looks like they killed massage in the X5M unless it's a website error ...
