X5 Build Quality Issues
Hey all,
I bought a new G05 not too long ago and noticed some build quality issues on it (parts installed incorrectly, paint imperfections). It's not anything that the everyday person would notice, but I definitely notice it and I feel like I should be compensated for the flaws given how expensive this SAV was. BMW suggested some fixes, but they seem like they could cause more problems than they would fix, so I'd rather them not take the car apart to *try* and get it back to factory spec. Next option is talking to the dealer to try and get some type of compensation for it. Should I just do that now or wait until the new year given that year-end tends to be a busy selling time for the dealerships. Also, does anyone have any tips or experience for handling something like this? Thanks! |

May I ask you what are the imperfections that needs the car to be taken apart to fix? Usually panel gaps and paint imperfections can easily be adjusted and repair without physical altercations.

You wouldn't be due any compensation but I would think they would take care of any appropriate items through your warranty.

I have owned many cars, many brands, almost all luxury brands. Never seen one to be perfect. My 22 X5 has issues here and there, like hood line not matching, one door handle in the rear sagging, occasional creaking during window operation etc. Honestly, I couldn't care less. It works, it looks pretty enough and rides well.
You haven't seem to have posted what issues you want to be compensated for, but some issues are just perks of buying a factory manufactured vehicle. BTW, in my experience, Tesla was the worst! |

Everyone has different concept of perfection. I tend to agree that X5 build quality leaves much to be desired. I don’t really care about paint quality and exterior gaps (although this is also unpleasant - for example, anyone will tell you how vulnerable individual colors are, for example tanzanite blue), but interior noises is something that drives me crazy - and I have a lot of them. The common issues for example are rattling panoramic roof or tailgate. My experience with Audis or BMWs that were built in Germany is much better than with X5 from SC. Fortunately, I don’t have any mechanical concerns and the car drives perfectly, but the interior noises literally ruin all experience especially if the car is quiet itself and have an acoustic glass. I will probably avoid BMW SAV when I buy a next car.

A 2022 45e and a 2012 3.5d. Neither has any rattles/squeaks etc. and I find that particularly amazing in our diesel, which now has 107,000 miles. It is as tight today as it was when new. Last edited by LarsOtium; 12-10-2022 at 08:46 PM.. |

I guess I got lucky that my 2022 X5 came perfect from factory and its been zero issues since. Just had it taken in for my first dealer 10k service, wonderful. On the other hand, my previously newly bought 22 Porsche Caynne Turbo at double the price of X5 had issues with rusty/squeaky rear brakes and noisy tailgate that dealer couldn't resolve after numerous attempts.

It would be shocking if any kind of compensation were paid. (And if it were, it should include some kind of signed agreement about what you can claim against the warranty in the future.)
I cannot see a dealer or BMWNA agreeing to this, but I guess you never know unless you ask. There's already a process in place to fix your concerns for free: the warranty. If you don't want them to try and make things better that way, well...that's on you. |

not much to be done unless it could qualify under a lemon law "your vehicle must only have an unreasonable repair history under the warranty, including (but not limited to) 3-4 repair attempts for the same problem, 6 repairs total on the vehicle, or 30 days out of service by reason of repair" I own a 2020 X5 40i, a 2020 330i made in Germany and a 2023 M440i GC made in Germany as well. There is HUGE gap in build quality between the US and the German made vehicles! The list of X5's problems is unacceptable long - from electronics and navigation malfunctioning, tailgate functionality, to oil pump and turbo failure. My lease will be up in June '23 and considering all the issues I encountered, this time I am going to go for a different brand. The BMW's quality's standards in the US nowadays are absolutely UNACCEPTABLE and the inconvenient in my case exceeded the joy and fun of driving these cars! |

^i haven’t researched, from my memory the engine and transmission comes from Germany, same with other parts and gets assembled in US
Of course there are US vendors and US made parts to streamline the supply chain |

My X5's parts come from - Germany 23% - Mexico 20% - US & Canada 31% with engine built in Austria and transmission in Germany They must be putting them together differently, in Spartanburg, not necessarily in the good way. |

I've found the G05 to be well built overall. I've owned a few and problems are way down from the old days.
I use a special tool check my new cars before I pay for them. My wife gives them a good once over. She is into details and we have turned a couple down due to thing we found pre-delivery. The problems are usually always due to the dealer messing something up. |

Try lubricating all the rubber seals around the door edges (where they meet the body, hatch rubber seals, and every rubber part that moves to meet the body panel. This removed most of the noise I had with my current X5. |

My 2020 G05 is my first BMW and I’ve had zero quality or mechanical issues. My wife has an X3 and same for her. Two different dealerships in Jersey. I’d say you might’ve just got a ‘Friday’ built car.
