Rough Downshifts Under Braking
I got to spend some quality time with the X5 over the weekend as we went on a small trip. I thought I noticed this before but now I'm sure I do: under braking the downshifts in comfort mode are perceptible and sometimes harsh. Even in my 340i xDrive (which in theory has the "same" powertrain) the downshifts under braking are smoother even in Sport or Sport+.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is it something that will improve with time? Is anyone aware of a TCM software update? Also I notice that when the idle stop is on and you're decelerating to a stop it tends to jerk the car to a stop more than if it's off. It's not violent or anything but I notice it and passengers may think I'm stopping short. |

Well it always makes me feel better when I'm not the only one who senses an issue, hopefully BMW will have a TCM update which will smooth the static downshifts under braking in comfort mode.

Mine too. More noticeable in certain situations than others. Usually in stop/go traffic that get's rolling briefly then stops - which may confuse the shifting algorithm.

Personally I rate this as the biggest issue of what I’ve seen so far. I can handle tech. glitches and leather imperfections etc. but a rough drive line on a luxury car with a slush box in 2019 is unacceptable. This has been a none issue for decades know and I’m seriously OCD about jerkiness, knocking etc. in the drive line on a car like the X5, ruins the whole driving experience.
Please let us know when this is fully fixed for you. |

How come nobody noticed this erratic transmission behavior earlier? The car is out since end of last year. Is this something new / recent or all 2019 X5s are like this and only takes to pay careful attention to notice? Engine / transmission are exactly the same on X5 and X7 so both should be subject to the same issues... unless it was introduced with some recent firmware re-flash which gives some hope that it can be corrected.

Perhaps it's one of those things where it's not as pronounced and not very easy to notice? But once you notice it, you can't really "un-notice it". I had this with the back end noise which only I could hear on one of my previous cars, you know these Honda rough noisy and cheap suspensions. It was driving me crazy but my wife could not understand what I'm talking about And it was a known issue half of that model owners complained about while another half was saying they did not have this problem. Dealership eventually came out with some TSB to replace the shocks / struts or whatever it was.

Perhaps but I don't think so. If it was a widespread issue I think it would have been discussed earlier and more people would be chiming in to this thread. It would be interesting to see if there are any commonalities with those experiencing it. Such as, build date, tire size, xLine or MSport, etc.

Yeah, feels like engine braking. No rev matching down shifts. Doesn't bother me though.

Same here... any resolutions?
I've had my 2019 X5 4.0 with the M-sport package for about 3 weeks... the "perceptible" downshifting in comfort mode is definitely my biggest issue with the car. Has anyone found a solution???

The 40i, 50i, M50i all have the same 8 speed ZF transmission, so it’s odd how not everyone feels it. Last edited by mmm50i; 06-13-2023 at 09:53 PM.. |

I’ve been experiencing this lately on my MY24 X6 40i msport too. The engine/transmission has become perceivably more harsher since break-in. Car is at 1300 miles now and I feel/hear downshifts at every stop sign in the neighborhood. Really annoying.
Not just the downshifts, but the engine growl has become more noticing too. Like the car is driving rougher somehow. |

This was the first thing I noticed when I drove the 24 X5 for the first time from my old Nissan. This is evident and would be great if it can be fixed.
Being said that, got used to it now. Hardly noticing these days. |

I’ll take it to the dealership next week and have it looked at. I also have sunroof rattling and cabin noise insulation issues that I need them to look at.

What did you find? I notice the same thing on mine, particularly as the car is slowing down (i.e. coming to a stop light)
