How reliable is the 50d engine?

Hi guys
I am in UK, got last run 50d, (UK)but recently read that BMW dropped engine due to its reliability and complex nature, emissions were the issue I was told about.
I have had no issues with my current G05 or my previous F15 50d did 60k in the F15 and current on 26k on mine.
Have any 50d owners had any issues, I would welcome comments from X5 and X7 owners
Thanks

I've had the F15 X5 M50d for 4 years before moving onto my year old X7 M50d.
I can honestly say that in the last 5 years of ownership of the M50d, I've had no issues with the engine.
I would certainly recommend this engine for performance and reasonable fuel consumption.

I've had mine for three years now and fine. Sometimes, when you drive a lot in city the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) gets dirty with soot and you have to regenerate it driving at constant speed and around 3000 rpm every one or two weeks. If i donīt do it I can feel it by the smoke.

It is important to do this for 30-40 minutes so that the DPF gets the necessary temperature to burn soot.

Quality fuel is also very important for this diesel engines, so use only Premium Diesel that has a higher level of cetane.

I have a 2020 M50d and have had zero issues with it. From what I know the engine itself is pretty bulletproof - it and its derivatives are used all over the BMW range. I do know that BMW were struggling with emissions for the Quad turbo version... maybe that's the reason they decided to drop it... that and diminishing demand. having said all that its a fabulous engine in the G05.

Folks I have just joined this forum and this is my first post! Recently i was asking myself the same question about the M50d motor in the G05 with quad turbos. Previously I ran an E53 4.4 litre V8 for 300,000 kms over 10 years with few issues. A great drive in its day. i then purchased an E70 40d with twin turbos in 2012. This had 265,000 kilometers on the odo after 10 years of ownership. Another great and reliable vehicle. i recently decided to upgrade however in Australia, only the 30D in a diesel is available. The 2023/24 model is an unknown. I do a lot of towing. I have just purchased a 2019 M50d with several extras and full-service history. The vehicle is a revelation after the previous two, excellent X5s. My research on the B57, M50d motor indicates that it was released in 2016 and manufactured through 2020 and used in 5s, 7s and Xs. It could not meet the new Euro emissions standards from 2021 and with the aftermath of the VW "diesel gate" and the high cost of manufacture, the motor was sadly dropped. I am looking forward to many years of happy ownership. Will be interesting to see what is in the next M50 diesel (if there is one)
Regards from Sydney

sorry to resurrect this thread but this crazy engine is on my radar - G05 M50D ... does anyone know if this engine is unreliable or reliable, any tips, things to make sure you pay attention to?

never owned a diesel in my life! when you say Premium Diesel, how do you know it's a Premium Diesel? I thought if i bought this and they stopped shipping petrol to this part of the world i can just go to the truck stations and refill - doesn't sound like that qualifies as Premium Diesel does it?

So envious. Wish we still had a diesel option in the US. I had a 335d sedan and it was awesome!
