Hey everyone. I’ve been messing with my car for the past few months and have noticed a section in the iDrive for a Digital Key. After researching, I’ve found that the only way to get a digital key is through the MyBMW app. My app doesn’t have the Digital Key option.

My question is: has anyone else had this issue where the car shows it as a feature but you aren’t able to get one because the app doesn’t offer it? And if you have and you have a digital key now, what steps did you take?

what country are you located?

Digital Key is an option only if you have Comfort Access (not as standard as one would think). are you certain the Digital Key tile is not offered in your MyBMW app? IOW, did you swipe the tiles properly to 'turn the pages'?

I’m located in the US. I do have comfort access in my build. I know because I have it set to lock and unlock as I walk to and from the car. I looked in my app, but it only offers “Vehicle Finder”, “Engine Start”, “Remote Camera”, and “Remote History”. I reached out to the feedback portion of the app, but I haven’t heard back yet.

Maybe try removing your car from the app and try re-adding it. I may not work, but should be quick to try it and see.

I think it's because your X5 is a 2019. Digital Key is only available for X5 from 2020 with a July build and after.

I myself have a 2019 X5 My0419 and don't have the Digital Key Tile on the My BMW app. Shame cause I used to have a Samsung Phone and I was able to put the digital key into it until BMW discontinued it.

Not an expert but didn't the X5 have digital key for iphone but not for samsung in 2019.

Are you maybe referring to the card? The 2019's don't support the digital key on the phone.

are referring to your digital key card (the credit card-looking key)? if so, that's different. he's referring to iPhone Digital Key which wasn't supported until July 2020 builds.

Not all iPhones are supported. I believe you need at least XR or later or something like that. If not supported, it does not show on your myBMW.

True. I just use it to open the car when I don't carry my fob. Have never tried to pair it with my phone. My error for not reading more carefully.

i think you're still a little unclear of the different technologies.

the digital KeyCard won't pair with your phone. it's set up through iDrive, which you've already done and use successfully.

Digital Key for compatible phones is set up through the MyBMW app for cars produced July 2020 and later. you have an MY19, so you don't have the Digital Key feature, only the digital KeyCard.

I didn't think about doing this. I'll try it when the car is out of the garage later.

@mandomedic112 For some reason, I was under the impression that all MY2019 X5's had Digital Key (via my iPhone 12 Pro Max and not the key card) capability, especially since I'm able to activate one via the iDrive. I have a 03-29-2019 build.

I've attached a picture of the "Activate Key" setting in my vehicle. If I am misunderstanding what it means, please let me know.

Update: I removed my vehicle from the My BMW App, I deleted the app, reinstalled and added the vehicle back. Still no Digital Key tile in the app.

When I looked it up in the Digital Manual, it mentioned that the Service Center has to set up a pin or code for the Digital Key. The next time I go in for service I will ask them about it.

no need to bring up the 'issue' at service. there's nothing wrong with it.

you mentioned you have MY19. that's the reason. as mentioned above, MY19 doesn't support Digital Key for iPhones. support was provided with new hardware on July 2020 to current builds.

your MY19 supports the digital KeyCard, not the Digital Key for iPhones which explains why you don't have the Digital Key tile in your MyBMW app.

I think we should clarify what we mean by Digital Key. The early version for Androids, I think only Samsungs, was available on the 2019's but that was removed and replaced with the changes made in the 2020s.

Edit: It was only available for the Samsung Galaxy 7s at first and then some more Samsung phones were added. Here is a video and PDF.

It's because there's still the option to activate the key card. The digital key menu for both a smart phone and key card is the same.
