remote software upgrade

I have a 2019 x5 40i, and I have yet to be able to install a remote software upgrade. I down load the software ok, but then next step is supposed to be for the vehicle to tell me it is time to install the update. This never happens.

My 4 year warrantee will expire next month and I will have my vehicle in for servicing and installing 2 software updates that have piled up.

I would like to request that they FIX the software so that I can do the remote software upgrade myself. I know a lot of people have had trouble with this. Do you know if they should be able to fix it now?

They keep telling me to just bring it in, but that is a pain and takes several hours. I would like the software working correctly before the warrantee expires.

Are there any other things that you would have them check before the warrantee runs out?

Thank you in advance.

Take it to the dealer and reference SIB 09 03 21 and they should upgrade you to the latest version. It may or may not allow you to receive future OTA's but as least you will be current.

Found the same thing recently and have complained. I told them "just give me a chance to say "go" and be done with it". It just sits there.

I find using a phone app to update is just as much as PITA.

I finally got both bimmers updated. How I don't know.

An update was downloaded to my X5 this morning. I am waiting for it to be installed. Car is parked in my garage. Does it need to be outdoors?

Got my update today. All done and installed very quickly. No delays or waits.
Just had to re-program my 'start stop' setting.

It doesn't need to be outdoors, but there have been reports of updates bricking cars, so you might want to have the car in a place where it can be easily towed away..

I'm still stuck on 11/2019.70. I asked the dealer last time to manually update and she said she can't, it has to be sent to the vehicle.

is that accurate?

They can always install an update using a tester if they want. It has been done to my car at least twice.

As mentioned, that is not accurate. Since you are on 11/2019 they need to update it under warranty assuming yours is still active. Just mentioned the SIB below.

Pure Remote Upgrades Software - Hell

This is remarkable. The price of these damn BMW's. And, no one can help over at the BMW dealership either?! I'm on 03/2023.50 which has been downloaded. Have followed the instructions to a "t". Problem is, it will NOT INSTALL in my X5 AGAIN (as usual). Anyone else experience the same 'ol b.s.? WTF?!! Hopefully, with a under the previous warranty visit they'll have to cover it even when it's NOT any longer.

UPDATE 11/7/2023 visit: My local BMW dealership service rep (have a good relationship with), invited me to swing by at a.m. opening time. The main (take away) proposed suggestion(s) after my visit was to ensure my 2019 BMW X5's battery was charged. He says it's possible as to why mine isn't accepting it to INSTALL in my vehicle, even after it's been successfully downloaded to my iPhone 13 Pro. I'm speaking of the 03/2023.50 remote software update version. He said to try and trickle charge my battery under the hood +/- posts. He claims that their service dept. says they're 90% sure that's the problem. So, I bought a NAPA Carlyle $52.00 battery 6/12v (4 amp) maintenance charger. We will see if he's right. Otherwise, he says we can charge the $300.00 to re-program your BMW's complete vehicle's software. Which supposedly can cause other issues, he said. He highly recommended against doing it. It's being charged as we speak here. I'm hopeful that this works. Or, wait until the next RSU upgrade and update push.

You have to take the car to the dealership. It's absurd, but that's how BMW's updates work. Hurry before your warranty expires, otherwise they will charge you a fortune for that.

Depends on the version you are running. If it is after 07/2021 and it is not tied to a warranty repair then BMWNA will not pay the dealer to do the update. There are a few who will do it out of customer goodwill but most will charge even if you n warranty.

As has been said, there are a few things that must be done for an OTA update to occur:
- parked in a flat area
- parking brake on
- vehicle off
- the battery(ies) charged sufficiently - this is not indicated to the owner, but is real
- if an iPhone, you've enabled it to share files (again, not indicated to the operator - even if it shows it's 'connected' to the phone, if the phone can't share files in the BMW app, it won't transfer)

Not following YOUR last step. Can you be a bit clearer and explain that, please? Share/unshare iPhone 13 files?

I clarified in another thread where he stated this. I pointed out there is no “share files” toggle. he meant to say “enable Local Network” in Settings > MyBMW app.

Got it, thanks. My iPhone 13 is set up this way. Still... no joy after following completely EVERYTHING BMW has told me to do. They have problems, they know it and won't properly address it. i.e. Makes for poor customer service - IMHO.

A sidebar question - how important is it to stay current on software updates? I am still on 2021 update and holding because the current 2023 update breaks coding ability with BC. Did not see anything important in the update that affects pre LCI functionality enough to tempt upgrading.

I wouldn't mind updating to 2022 update but there is no way to get an older update in BMW OTA universe.

The 11/2022 update fixed a potential battery drain related to the transmission. If that happened it could leave you stranded. That is reason enough to get the upgrade.

Ah - okay. But there is no way to get the 2022 upgrade now.

I don't want to get the 2023 upgrade and thus far I haven't felt any battery drain.

I don't see the "enable local network" option on my Iphone 15. I guess I'll find out if I need it when the next OTA drops for me.

this is not true. I was able to code everything back in BC on my 2021 45e after updating to 03/2023.50

the only known coding issue involved Auto Start/Stop which didn’t affect me since I never coded anything for it
