I go both ways on this. I am a Audiophile as I own several production studios but I have also learned to keep car audio expectations within their own limitations. I use many B&W speakers in our larger reference rooms and think at that level are outstanding. This is in a extremely acoustically controlled environment.
I popped for the top audio upgrade a few times and they certainly don’t return the investment when trade-in comes around. Seems like the majority of people want the upgraded audio system and shy away from the extreme audio upgrade system. I popped for the $3800 upgraded sound in my C4S but found the HK system (when properly adjusted) very pleasing in the new X5. Good enough in a moving vehicle. I had other options like Merino seats, leather dashboard, M-Sport brakes, etc that took a priority. The B&W system no doubt is a better system but I question is it 3 times better for the money than the HK when the car is in motion?? .

What settings did you settle on for the HK?

Can you share the HK EQ settings you feel are best?

Is the HIFI that bad. On the previous X3/4 it sound was better rounded though not as powerful as the HK.

Mine has HK and I got a loaner with the standard system. I noticed a difference. I don't know how to describe sound quality, but the standard system to me just sounded flat without a punch. It's fine if you just listen to talk radio or don't care that much about music.

I think the standard Hi-Fi on the G05 sounds better than the HK on my 340i; however, the G05's standard system is not powerful so it will not be ideal for listening at higher volume or with the windows down. The HK in the G05 sounds rather good (and I will probably improve it with the right EQ setting) and is also powerful. It would be awfully hard for me to justify such an increase for the BW when ambient road and wind noise will almost always be fighting the incremental improvement it offers.

I am thankful I do not have a sensitive ear for music quality. I went with the standard system and am completely satisfied, especially since I listen to streaming music over Carplay.

I'm not knocking those that do obsess over fidelity, but I've never been able to tell the difference myself.

I thought the X5's HK sounded better than the X3's, I'm sure the acoustics with the larger cabin plays a part. It sounds really good to me.

I did or I'm trying at least. Already replaced the center speaker with Audison Prima K4M, Fronts with Focal ES 100K4, the subs with the SWS and the rear with Audison Prima X4M.

However I ordered Audiotec Fischer UP 7BMW amp, and the supplied harness is not plug and play, I saw a G01 thread that he had to remove a pin of the harness, however my HiFi G05 can connect to the supplied harness, but the OEM amp has 3 inputs instead of one, and I'm pretty sure that one of them is most signal, like in the Top Hifi Version. So it can physically connect, but it does not turn, detects it or play any sound at all. I already contacted Technic and he says that it is not compatible because of the iDrive Version. The UP 7BMW worked with the G01 because it has the iDrive 6, but the G05 has the iDrive 7.

Already contacted Audiotec to see if this can be solved with a different harness, or if I lost almost a grand here.

If anyone has an insight on this, please let me know

One thing we didnt care for when ordering was the sound system. Knowing the next 5 yrs we wont be turning it loud enough to actually enjoy it, we opt for the standard hifi system. Plus not sure if the Baby Shark Dance song will sound any difference on any system On that note, so far the hifi unit still sound pretty damm good. not sure what that mean coming from someone that doesnt really like blasting their music for other cars to hear. lol

It's a nightmare to maintain a good acoustic level in a vehicle due to the presence of multiple reflective surface resulting in distortion. However, sound quality can still be improved using quality component. It won't be studio quality where it's acoustically tamed.
If you're an audiophile and can appreciate incremental improvement over HK, it's certainly worth the price.

you really do catch the nuances of "Baby Shark doo doo doo doo" with the Bowers system, though!

Are you replacing the existing equipment or adding a sub in the back? I’m nervous to install aftermarket speakers and sub because I’m worried it will mess up the electronics of the car.

I agree. Even the price I paid for the HK is high. Cost more than the Sonos I put in my living room (didn’t get the sub and the base is MORE than adequate for the space.) that Sonos system is da bomb.

I upgraded from standard, but still don’t have my car - I hope to get it tomorrow. I’m not an audiophile, but I love loud music in my car (only place I can really blast it).

We didn't have the HK system in my wife's '16 X5 and I thought it was terrible, especially compared to the Bose system in my Yukon which was ridiculously good. We just upgraded her X5 and it has the HK system and sounds great. Definitely worth the upcharge.
