This is still an SUV....
And it makes it easier to load the cargo area, and you don't have to worry about scraping the bumper. Plus if you need to drive with the top clamshell open because you're carrying an especially long item, you can do it while leaving the bottom closed, and keeping the rest of the cargo safe. And the top hatch doesn't lift sky high because it's not as long as other SUV's. I can't think of anything negative about the two piece design, especially now that both pieces are power operated. But to the other poster who was going to buy something else over it, enjoy.

I like the split tailgate. It's one of the things on the X5 that makes it better than most if the competition.

They need to make an x5/x6 m50i. Big mistake if they do not.

Without question! MSport w/upgraded wheels is always what you want to make it look good (like my previous E70 and F15). I know once I see it IRL, the wife's G01 X3 M40i may have to go. Despite the fun factor with the M40i, this new G05 MSport is going to have so much more presence!! Possibly 325 wide tires on 22"!!!

correct!

And since all the new models like: 6GT, X2, X3/X4 all just have diesel and petrol, it seems BMW is holding out on any Hybrids until a certain moment or technology is available.

Com'on where are those insiders... enlighten us!

The other stuff you mentioned I don't see on the post. Plus at the cost of these cars, marketing "off-road" doesn't seem too appealing even if they are very capable off-road.
The air suspension is height adjustable. Marketing super expensive SUV's for their "off road" abilities seems to work pretty well for Range Rover.
This! One of the best drivetrain bits of the RRS. Always been a tad limiting having front springs I'd say.

Yeah sure because Land Rover has heritage off road. BMW does not
I'm guessing BMW must have taken a good long look at LR Air Suspension while they owned LR? I wonder if it existed back then and why only now it's being deployed.

Great move/option anyway.

I am sure some of that stuff was still in the lab at that time

Most of the stuff is there right now but we suspect some of the stand alone options are still missing.

Air Suspension was introduced to the Range Rover Classic in 1992 and revised in 1994 (Classic was produced until 1995). The 2nd Gen P38 launched in 1994 used the same basic chassis and EAS as the 94-95 LWB Classic. When BMW acquired Rover Group that same year, they absolutely hated the P38 and scrapped the plans to do a major overhaul for release in 1999 (including an ultra luxury V12 model). Instead, the L322 was developed along with and thus shared quite a bit with the first X5. The E53 was available with both a rear axle self leveling and EHC 2 Axle Adjustable Air Suspension (std on 4.6/4.8iS).

Top Knowledge. I bet BMW hated it due to weight and packaging restrictions back then.

As a CA I cant tell you how happy it makes me to see air suspension being offered in both X5 and X7. People ask for a lot, not for the "off road" capabilities but to make it easier on kids to claim in the car and for the snow months.

Or go to one of those ultimate drive or Susan G Koman drive events. I've gotten that $1500 from participating in those events last year.
