demo vehicle, new battery?

I found an M60i, inquired on it and was told it was not for sale, it was a demo vehicle. Within a few hours, they messaged me back that it WAS for sale, has 374 miles on it, but in the shop getting the battery replaced. I asked why a brand new car would get a new battery and she said it was on the showroom floor and wasn't driven so the battery died. I have the build sheet and looks like the car has been at the dealership less than 2 mos. Do you think the battery story is legit? Would you even consider buying this demo X5?

Yeah, it's legit. BMW says that cars in the showroom should be on a charger. With people in and out of them, the car wakes up and can drain the battery. If the dealership didn't charge it properly, it could kill the battery.

And, I'd buy a demo. My first BMW was a demo. It's just a very lightly used car.

At my dealership, all showroom vehicles are connected to a battery tender.

did they give you a decent discount?

Even an AGM battery will have issues if you deplete it too far too often as can happen in a showroom with lots of people getting in and out of it. On the mild hybrids, it can also affect the 48vdc battery.

My 2017 X5 35d was a demo. I bought it at 20% off MSRP although it had about 3500 miles on it. Twas a great vehicle.

Right now they’re at 8% off which is what I’ve been offered at 2 other dealerships for new, non demo.

How much more off do you think the 374 mile demo is worth? Obviously I’d like to get as much off as possible!

I’d negotiate at least 10% probably topping out at 12%.

That’s what I think. Absolutely no less than that.

Already having 374 miles on it is probably an advantage that hopefully they wouldn't charge you a premium for (lol)!

Just a thought. You might check into your state laws regarding new/used car sales. Has the car been titled/registered or have they just been using dealer tags. At what mileage does the state declare it used even if it hasn't been previously registered? If it's reached the threshold of used car, that changes the numbers.

They offered an additional discount of $112 (30 cents per mi x 374 miles) which is a bit insulting. I can’t bring myself to pay the same for a demo as a new order so I’m going to pass.

Good call that’s exactly what I would do as well.
