X6 is uncommon! Why not a 3/5 wagon?

Does anyone find it interesting that BMW sells nearly 10 X5s for every 1 X6 they sell in the USA?

In 2022 it was 1.66 X6 for every 10 X5
In 2023 it was 1.38 X6 for every 10 X5

Mind you, BMW sells not one, not two, but THREE versions of the X6 (40i, M60i, M)!!!

They had to EPA test EACH version so that wasn’t cheap either.

Given that the TOTAL # of X6 sold in the USA (all variants) is ~10,000, you’d have to think a wagon version of the 3er or 5er would have to make some economic sense, right?

Could they not sell 5-10k of them per year?

I'm not a fan of wagons. But I suspect they will sell way more than X6s.

E39 Touring sales in the US market from 1999-2003:

Having owned an e34 525iT and an e39 540iT...I do like a wagon...but the higher ride height of the x3/x4/x5/x6/x7 models probably wins out over the lower ride height & center of gravity of the Touring/wagons.

I am a big fan of wagons and wish BMW would bring a 3 and 5 series wagon here again. I had a 2002 Audi allroad 6-speed and and a Jetta Sportwagen TDI 6-speed. These were 2 of my favorite cars in the long list of cars I have owned. I am a sucker for a manual transmission wagon.

So, Volvo, Audi and Mercedes all bring us very attractive wagons, but I'm not sure how well they sell. The RS6 Avant and AMG E63 Wagon (RIP) are beasts.

Being a long roof fan, I just don't find fastback SUVs attractive (no offense to the X6 owners), although I do find fastback sedans attractive (A5 Sportback, A7).

Unlikely that they would or else you would see them for sale here.

You just need to look at my Username and you know what I think 😉

When I shopped around last year the final two in the running were the Audi A6 Allroad Wagon and the X5.

It was the LCI and the much shorter delivery time which won us over. The Audi would have been 10 to 12 months from order to delivery.

As some showed in all reality this market does not favor Wagons. Rumors on the Audi side indicate that they may abundant Wagons as well.

For me, the X6 is in a weird spot in the X line up.

Practicality - The X5 has way more room in the trunk.
Agility - The X4 is better on turns, with less lean.

So, I don't know; maybe some people like the look?

This is the first version of the X6 that I have liked. I've always thought it to be an ugly vehicle but I rather like the current release.

Correct but that is a niche item not something that will be sold in large volumes but you have to think it will be profitable or else they wouldn't do it.

absolutely! X6 is also a niche, IMO. Wouldn't mind a M5 Touring

CUV/SUV sales cannibalized wagon sales in the US. And I am not surprised by the low X6 sales compared to the X5. Wanting the heft of an SUV without its practicality, with subjective aesthetics, is certainly a niche market. I would expect a similar ratio for GLE coupes vs SUVs based on what I see on the road.

I guess it sort of is, perhaps I used the wrong word. I was thinking of it as whether it is marketed to the general consumer. The X6 starts in the $70's and the M5 Touring will likely start in the $130's.

Audi was/is selling the RS6 Avant here. It's in that $130k plus range and I doubt they sell 1000 a year here. MB has sold the E55/E63 wagons here as well, not a high volume model either. If the US were to allow companies to certify by similarity (wagons are able to use results from sedans ) then we would likely have a lot more options. Unfortunately our government is so full of bureaucrats and cost to bring products to market, it won't happen.

As many fans of wagons as there are (myself included), it's really hard to justify them at that price point whenypu can get an SUV like X5M/RSQ8/GLE63S at that price point that has more space, is just as fast, and can tow your boat. The SUV would also be many times easier to sell used.

They also seem the A6 Allroad which is a wagon. Like BMW, they don't break out sales by model within a series. For 2023 they sold 8,319 vehicles under the A6 umbrella which includes the A6, S6, A6 Allroad and the RS 6 Avant. I would imagine the wagons were a fairly small portion of those sales.

Totally agree. If all road and RS6 are 10% of their totally sales I'd be surprised.

As cool of an idea as they are, they just don't do it for buyers here.

Except of course for the Wagon Queen Family Truckster.

Depending on how well it turns out, my plan is to switch to the M5T in a few years. Hopefully they’ll have improved upon the hybrid setup from the XM. Wasn’t too impressed with the XM when I test drove it. Granted it wasn’t the Label version.

may not have had the initial engine break-in (~350 miles). Haven't had the opportunity to drive one that has gone past 350 miles yet, but the Label certainly was impressive

It was in my final shopping selection last year. It was approx. $10k below 50e including night vision and anti dazzle matrix lights. But in the state not a single dealer had one at their yard. And for an Allroad the ground clearance was fairly low.
The 3 dealers I visited didn’t order for stock, only with custumer order (10 to 12) months. When I asked to the why, they indicated the Allroad is very small amount compared to the rest of the 6 series.
It almost seemed that they sold more RS 6 Avant. Seems to be some demand in this price segment. I am sure BMW and Mercedes are aware of this as well.

Consumers shy away from the X6 because it's priced about 10% higher for what is essentially the same vehicle as an X5. That and there's never any incentives on the X6 either. The X4 is the same.

I guess BMW wants these to remain niche vehicles.
