I have the M badges on my fenders but no badges at all in back
I just moved back to Texas from Germany after 12 years. I have noticed something changed with the M emblem on vehicles on the German models, and I asked at the dealership about it, because my 2018 BMW X5 I bought in Germany, has the M emblem on the driver and passenger side front panel, above the vent, but I didn't get an X5M.
I bought mine fully loaded with the M Package, and the dealership told me that the M emblem comes on the side if you get the M Package. I thought this was weird because I didn't have an M. After driving about a week in my X5 in Germany, I did start to notice other new 2018 models that had the M on the side, but they weren't M models. So I am assuming they purchased the M Package with their BMW. Oh, and on the back of the vehicle, there is no X5 at all. It's blank. Came like this new, from the factory in Munich. I think this is one of those...but not sure. |

It seems that everywhere in the world except the USA gets the side fender emblems with the M Sport package on many if not all BMW models. I’m not sure why they delete them in the US. I like the way they look and may end up adding them to my X5.

In Europe it's standard to come with an M in the fenders and with lettering in the back. You can choose when you order a new car if you keep it or not, they can be removed separately. You can keep the fenders badge and remove the lettering in the back, you can remove the fenders badge and keep the lettering in the back or remove both. Each removal has his unique order code. I hope it helps |

Somewhere in the forum a thread (or two) on the topic. OEM badge readily available and easy to add to US cars - one member received the car with the badges factory-installed in the US I believe, but probably a unique one-of-one. No idea why they are deleted in the US - all the M Sport builds overseas (to included Canada) include the badging unless delete requested.

All of BMW press photos show the badge. My early production 50i M-Sport got them and we used it as a template for others that wanted to add them. My order sheet was also a bit different then as the packages were changed up. The badge is really small on the side. The “M” on the brake calipers are a lot larger and more noticeable. I just ordered OE Black M 4 trunk emblem.I wanted OE black M emblem and this one cost $23 each to put on my MW fender. I don't know if it'll look too big or out of place but will see.

Canadian G05 X5 M Sport models do not include ///M side badges. I gave my SA crap about it at order time (they were spec'd as an unchangeable removal on the order sheet), but there are way bigger issues with BMW behaviour to focus on than badges when you can put them on yourself.

we added ours, not just to "show off" the badge, but it feels empty without anything there. it fills the fender space nicely with the badge. we do have a m-sport.

Exactly it is not there to show off but having it there adds nice touch. I would not put it on trunk or on kidney grille.

If I add them to my car, how do I apply them? Do they have an adhesive backing or do I need to use something else? Any good installation guides available?

Just clean area with rubbing alcohol. Then use blue painters tape to mark the bottom and sides of exactly where it is to be placed. Use my above template pic as a reference. You will see the fender crease line as a visual reference. It’s odd BMW doesn’t have these on all NA M Sport models as it really add to that open space on the fenders. BMW should have at least given you the option as they could have squeezed $50 more out of you.
Just look above at our forums head page and the fender badge is clearly visible. |

I followed MystroX5 's instructions, but have not taken a proper photo with the badges. I purchased the badges from the dealer and they put them on for me.

Good to know, I thought they were only made in the US. I may have misspoke when I said "came from the factory"...I went to the factory in Munich to pick mine up (you also get to go on a tour of the factory when you're there, was pretty cool). I'm guessing they have some shipped over to Germany, no clue. I ordered it through a friend that works for BMW there in Munich (I was living in Stuttgart).
I haven't seen one with the M on the side in San Antonio yet. I was debating taking them off, but seeing that BMW is starting to change and place them in the US, I think I'll leave them on. It does look good on the other vehicles that posted here. Cool... Last edited by PaddyPI; 10-22-2019 at 11:28 AM.. |
