Ordering X5 50e - couple of questions

Hi everyone,

I’ve been lurking for a bit and just registered.

//skip below…I’m just rambling

So, at the end of December I almost pulled the trigger on ordering an X5 PHEV. However, at the time I was really not impressed with my salesperson (tl;dr … I’d rather have a root canal than deal with him). I sent him a text that I was done with him and I wanted a new salesperson, however, he sent me an acceptable quote for my build and I was ready to drop a deposit. But, when I was about to hand over the deposit, I started seeing on Reddit and this forum about the production delay/halt … inquired with the salesperson whom (after two days) confirmed the delay. He asked if I wanted to proceed to which I declined (which he never responded back). Anyway, I took January to research other vehicles from Mercedes, Volvo, Jag, Audi, etc. After all that, I still wanted the X5 PHEV. Damned the delays and possible CEL issue.

///still with me…now for my question(s):

-When I order and if accepted, will the MY24 be switched to a MY25 due to the production delay (I do not care if it raises the price). Just worried I could get the last MY24 after all the waiting. I would still like to be in the production queue though.

-Should I (or can I without currently owning a BMW) join the 3-yr BMW CCA membership for the $1k rebate? I suspect my build will take several months. It says 6 months waiting period, but is the “within 60 days of delivery” a loophole? For example, I get the car in 5 months, can I then request the rebate after waiting a month since it’s within the application period?

Welcome to the forum. Just for clarity, there was no halt to production, builds were and still are very limited due to supply issues. Given that it is highly unlikely you will be able to order a MY24. If you do and it is delayed to MY25 then you will have a choice of taking that.

You can join without owning however there is no loophole. With a three year membership you must be a member for 6 months prior to taking delivery.

Regarding the delivery time, you can pretty much get close to when the car will arrive at your dealer, provided your dealer has an "allocation slot." This is a magic word in BMW manufacturing, because it means the dealer has a spot on the production line, during a particular week of the year, when the car will be manufactured. Add a week after that for dealership delivery (eastern half of the US), or 2-3 weeks for the western half.

If your dealer does not have an allocation, all they are doing is taking your order and will assign it once an allocation becomes available to them.

There is a lot of reading on here about the order process if you feel like going down a rabbit hole on the topic.

Appreciate the responses .... and I failed to see the "membership of ... immediately preceding the delivery date" ... ha.

Regarding the "halt" vs "delay" ... yeah, I've been sort of confused about what exactly happened. Think it was originally rumored that production had halted until March (week 12) ... which caused me to pause on dropping a deposit.

Without inquiring with the dealership, would it be safe to say that they wouldn't have any allocation slots for MY24 ... with the current delays and what not?

As mentioned in my original rant, the X5 PHEV will be my next vehicle. I'll be happy if I can get one NLT August (car registration renewal month). So maybe I should just pause and order in April?

I've currently researching going through a Broker ... any cons going that route vs. dealership?

This probably is the wrong assumption. If a dealer isn't getting slots, they're probably going out of business. And there is still 2-ish months left of MY24 production.

Slots are handed out to dealerships based on their volume, but dealerships also regularly trade slots with each other.

Yes, that would be a safe assumption. There could have been some but have not heard that they issued any 50e slots this last round.

I guess a couple cons would be that you have to pay a fee and that you may have to ship the vehicle or travel to pick it up. The fee is usually made up for in the discount and time saved by you not having to shop around.

Have you seen some MY24 50e allocations being issued. I haven't and figured no one got any due to the production scheduling issues.

Actually, I didn't check before posting, shame on me , but I just did, and am coming up short as well. So I take back what I said earlier.

About a week ago, I saw my dealer had 2x 50es on their way to the dealership, but they're no longer listed in inventory. Guessing they were sold orders.

And I just built a 50e online, so when the "similar inventory near you" popped up, it's all 40is except for a few 50es which are already at dealerships.

Sorry for the mislead!

Not a problem, just wanted to make sure I didn't miss something.
