X5M Ordering and deal question

Hi Folks, Long time lurker and MB->BMW switcher here. I've been a long time Benz guy who's now fallen in love with the X5M. This is my first SUV, I'm looking for dealer recommendations to order the X5M from. I'm based in Austin but I don't mind ordering from a non-local dealer. Also, are there any discounts available on the X5M ? My local dealer is at MSRP.

I use Advantage BMW midtown in Houston. No discounts are likely as the car is so new

No discount from both dealers I currently use. I'd say that as long as you go to a dealer near you with a larger volume of sales you should be able to get an allocation faster if you're not a previous customer. Heard some dealers still didn't receive allocations for the X5M.

My dealer here in the Bay Area, already has an XM for sale on their website.

BMW of South Austin seemed nice to deal with. I tried working a deal to buy a X5M a customer abandoned and they wouldn't sell it to me since I didn't live in the area (IL). Their loss since the car sat their for a while, but despite not selling me the vehicle, the salesman seemed very nice and was trying to make it happen.

Not their loss, as they presumably will make money in warranty and other repairs. They wouldn't make a dime on servicing a car that immediately heads to Illinois. If I owned a dealership and had limited allocations, I'd restrict it geographically to provide those backend dollars.

He said they would have sold it to me if I had lived in Texas , meaning no backend dollars if I resided in Houston. He mentioned it was some kind of HQ BMW directive that they had to sell new vehicles to customers within the region. True/untrue? No clue...I imagine letting it sit there on the showroom floor for a few months cost them something. I agree that if it was eventually sold to someone in Austin that they would have made money on servicing.

This is 100% true. Has nothing to do with servicing. Some dealers just choose to ignore it and ditch any "incentives/backscratching" from BMWNA in the long run.

USAA new car buying service will get you 2k off. If you have that bank that is. It’s a military banking institution traditionally.

Question folks, My local dealer said he can put me on the preorder list and take a deposit down. MSRP

Now, someone from here connected me to a dealer in PA who offered 2% off, right off the bat. I still haven't spoken to them but I'm wondering, when is a good time to discuss this with my local rep? Better do it before doing the deposit?
