Stone chip issue below doors
I've only had my 21 competition for a few thousand miles and noticed major stone chips on the bottom of the doors on front driver and passenger side, I have had a few X5 50i in the past and never had this issue before, I know the wheels are bigger but I was expecting to see this after a few years, not a few months. At the rate I'm going I will need to repaint the doors after a year or two of ownership.
I have the bottom skirt wrapped in clear film, never thought to do the bottom of the doors Looks to be a serious problem with these cars, any solution to it? |

Not driving your car over gravel?
Wheel spacers will amplify this problem.

Sorry to see. Thats how my F85 X5M looked after one year of ownership. This is due to aggressive wheel offset combined with super sticky summer tires. All season tires doesn't pick up nearly as much rocks/pebbles but summer tires are like bubble gum. EVERYTHING gets stuck on the tread and it gets worse as the weather warms up.

That's why I lease and get a new factory paint job every three years.
On a serious note, can a body shop repair/correct and then apply PPF/cermanic coating? I assume you purchased your beast.

I've had the same issue with my E70 X5 M Sport, F85 X5M and now my F95 X5M. I had PPF applied to the lower section of the doors and the PPF looks like it was sand blasted, but at least the paint is protected. The PPF can easily be replaced.

Same issue with me... have now around 14,500 kilometers on the clock and the lower doors sections (driver and passenger) are full with stone chips (and a few are even quite big)... but I guess this comes automatically with an M if you move him properly

My detailer has a "track package" ppf combo. Clear bra the hood, bumper, running boards, the bottom portion of the doors, door cups.
Maybe look into something like this next time around.

Hi All - Have a 17 F85 with similar issues - just started a new thread abt this - I can foresee in the future that most if not all X5M’s of this generation will be affected. Mine currently has 75,000 miles and I will include pictures to show you of the damage. The entire car is PPF-ed COMPLETELY- this has gone Threw it - and showing signs of rust also . 120k car 6 years old garaged absolutely this should NOT BE HAPPENING!!!

Totally common on these BMW's brother. I had only 700 miles before full wrap and mine was not that bad, but there were some. The film luckily filled them in. But now that the film has been on for 40K miles, the film looks like it was sand blasted...lol.
The stickier the rubber you run also amplifies the issue. |

Your PPF stops at the panel edge. Probably plot cut PPF. If the edge was wrapped, u might not have the issue in the pic - or less chances of. What probably happen is you got a chip on the leading edge, then galvanic corrosion and the subsequent chunk of paint missing if not the additional corrosion in the pic depicted. |

paint and as durable as it used to
add aluminum in the mix. With steel panels, you could get a chip, maybe primer may show, but it takes a decent while from pinhole chip to rust and whatnot... IMO, galvanic corrosion on aluminum is faster than rust on steel |

I learn the hard way after having 2 X5's with big sticky summer tires that unless you run some sort of mud flaps up front the side of the car will get sand blasted. Noticed on my F95 even after several hundred miles I already started to see a few decent size chips on my front doors. Now with the flaps my doors after 3 years still look great even without PPF.

It looks like you bought your f85 used and those chips from the doors could have come from anywhere especially if you weren't the first owner and didn't know the history of the vehicle. Unfortunately I doubt bmw will do anything. I'd just get the doors resprayed and ppf. Good luck! |

I have no blemishes on my ppf currently 15k miles. Lower door panels look new still.
