Coolant smell?

Hey gang,

I notice from time to time when I have the windows down, or when I get out of the car while the engine is hot, that I can smell coolant. Anyone else experience this? I also noticed the other night some smoke/vapour from the left headlight area. I assume from one of the coolers. I wasn't driving the car hard at the time, so I found it strange.

Anyone experience anything similar?

No issues with the F95, but, I had a similar issue with GLE63S. That car had an overflow reservoir with a faulty cap (cover) that was on top of the engine. I would see residue around it, it was under the engine cover so I had to dig a bit. Once that was addressed the smell went away.

You might have nailed it. The overflow tank is right by the driver headlight, which is where I saw some steam the other night. I checked and the coolant level is below the min line (no coolant visible). One more thing for the dealer to look at…

Never noticed it with mine. Wondering if you might have a small pin hole leak somewhere from rocks hitting the coolers up front.

They'll end up replacing the cap….straight forward minor issue hopefully.

I still wonder why BMW only covered the main radiator and only one of the side radiators with a screen? They left the other side exposed.

You nailed it, they did replace the cap when I took it in.

A year or so later, I now have a low coolant warning. Definitely curious if this is something bigger. I’m 90% sure they mentioned topping up the coolant when they replaced the cap. Hopefully I’m not burning coolant, because I don’t see any leaks.

On my old 2012 X5M the turbo coolant hoses developed leaks which resulted in a distinct, sometimes overpowering, burning coolant smell along with visible white smoke coming out from under the hood. Unfortunately, it happened after the car was out of warranty and it was a very expensive fix. The hoses cost next to nothing but the labor cost was astronomical.
