Haven't been able to go in yet. Waiting for a different/unrelated part to come in (the plastic trim on both sides of my windshield are popping off - apparently bad dual-sided tape was the cause). Once those come in, I will head in. Talked to the service advisor, they have not heard back from BMW based on the audio clip I sent them either, but they asked me to drive with the shop foreman again next time I'm there. Will definitely share with y'all what I find out...loud music in the mean time...Arg!!

So, update from my side:
Feedback was received from BMW HQ. A special new glue was sent, so that the disc can be installed. This requires 24h drying time and the handover was moved to tomorrow.....?! special glue, ok?

Can you please post all the specifics and parts related? And what did the dealer say about where is this noise coming from? Thanks!

As pointed out by Totalangle in post #27 it is part number 3. It spins with the axle and should not, this moving/spinning sound generates the noise. I am not sure if BMW-USA also uses the "PUMA" system, like we do here in Germany, but the dealer should be able to locate that fairly easy.

Happy to report issues are now fixed it’s precisely part #3 on both rear axles reported by Totalangle.

So update on my end, just got the car back; my dealer inspected the rear differential and saw that while the dust covers are not damaged, the right side was not sitting flush, so they repositioned/reseated the cover. The impression I got is that--at least in my case--this may be a temporary fix; so we will see how long it lasts (I could be updating this post tomorrow, haha). Since mine was just on one side, I'm just speculating may be that's why they had such a hard time to duplicate it and why it comes and goes? Anyways, my service advisor also mentioned to me that BMW is aware of the issue and it's apparently a design flaw; the dealer thinks there will be a service bulletin or recall "at some point", so we will see whenever that is.

A little more context, I spoke with BMW USA directly last week which led to opening a case and having a case manager assigned who worked directly with my dealer's service department director to help speed things up and document my issue in detail. BMW may also reach out back to me to do case followup and I will let y'all know if I learn anything new. Please continue to share your experiences here if the issue comes back. Happy holidays!

Thanks Pete - dealer should have completely replace them for ya - I forced mine to replace it rather than just reposition or “put them back” - please keep us posted on future development and will see if the sound will ever come back with them completely replaced...fingers crossed......

Thanks! Yeah, if it comes back, I'm going to insist on replacements through the case opened with BMW. Also was just happy to get the replacement parts for my windshield trim/molding after more than a month...

Thank you!

BM have had my car twice with this issue and haven't been able to replicate the sound (it often lasts 20-30 seconds for me!).

Will call them tomorrow and book it in

I am experiencing the same issue and I am so happy for finding this thread, I sent it to my dealership. Funny note, my foreman reached out to BMW in the last 2 weeks and they didn't seem to be aware of this issue. Will keep everyone posted.

What is the cause of that noise. I get it from my left rear. sounds like a bearing squeaking. Has been going on for several weeks. What is the fast repair? Car was built in August 2020. Took delivery on 12/1/2019
car has about 1,500 miles on it.

Any chance of posting a redacted service ticket from your repair showing what they did so I can provided it to my dealer without them spending weeks trying to figure it out.

Same sound coming from the back end

I shared this about 5 days after I purchased my X5 40i. They couldn't figure it out.

Hi,

Just picked up my 2021 X5 x40. I have the same noise too with only 250km on my car. Would like to know what the cause is and how I can tell dealership to fix it.

Thank you

Weird noise too!

Hi
Thanks for this thread, I too have a strange sound.
Mine is when the car is cold, ( I think) it's very difficult to describe.
But it like a rotational metallic sound, it reminds me of a heat shield issue I had with a old 525i I had a life time ago.
When I hear this noise it's around 15-30 mph under steady acceleration, it appears to come from rear left side.
It's not a squeak, or a bazooka. But a resonating noise. It lasts about 5 seconds .
To be honest I tend to experience this on the way to the motorway in the morning, about 5 miles and then I just boot it and forget about it.
But it's starting to annoy me.
Going to try a d get to the bottom of this.
