X5 M50i ride quality gripes?

Hello all,
Curious to hear from current m50i owners about ride quality. Just picked up my X5M50i 2 weeks ago, already have 1300 mi on it and love the handling/acceleration but am left a bit disapointed by the ride quality over uneven pavement. Even in comfort, seems a little "unsettled"/bouncy and never truly smooth unless road is glass flat. For reference, I'm on stock 20' RF Pirelli all season tires. I'm coming from a 2017 benz E 400 wagon which was fairly smooth and obviously a completely different kind of vehicle. I've toyed with the idea of selling and buying another M50i with air suspension but I've heard several negative reports about loss of handling/dynamism and floatiness.

Looking forward to the collective wisdom of this forum-

No DHP. Have the standard M adaptive suspension that comes on m50i models.

Will DHP change how comfortable the car drives? I always assumed it just enhances how well the car takes corners. Doesn't DHP have the same springs and dampers as M Adaptive?

That's your problem IMHO.
I just sold my 2018 X5M. It was primarily my wife's car, but way too much for her (which I knew, but I'm the car nut). I was interested in the X5 M50i and test drove one last month with 20" A/S and no DHP and I was underwhelmed. I then decided to try it again once I found one with 22" summers and DHP and it was night and day and I'm taking delivery this weekend. Said goodbye to my X5M last night

That's what I thought as well. Anti-roll/stabilization and M adaptive pro.

Just picked up my M50i Monday. I'm coming out of a 17 750i msport w/air suspension and the way the two ride are night and day. I've only put 80 miles on the M50i, so it is a small sample size, but I love it. It is a bit choppy on uneven payment, but doesn't feel bouncy or unsettled to me and it can take a curve like its on rails. Very impressive for a SUV. I like to firmer feel and sharper steering as well. Again I've just had it a few days and haven't driven much so I will share more feedback after i finish the break-in.

No. I didn't want the integral steering. Had it on my 750 and it was kinda of twitch at higher speeds.

I have DHP on mine. Rides fine in comfort, and is a blast in sport plus. Also have 22” wheels with P Zero AS for winter.

Nice!
Curious why you didn't go Pirelli Winters instead of their AS?
I'm looking to do the same but with their winters as I have a second set of 22"

No issues so far with Denver's winter weather. I'm a bit concerned about the rears being skis in any deep snow. And then there is the freeze/thaw cycle and potholes with 35/30 sidewalls!!

I run all season in the winter since it is mostly dry roads. The all seasons will wear better as I drive about 1800 miles a month. I have never had any issues driving in snow - I grew up in Wyoming!

I'm having this debate in my head as I wait for my M50i to be built (w/DHP)
I'm in Glendale and I'm debating the A/S vs the snow Pirelli's on the 22's. I think you can make a strong argument that A/S will do fine year round in Denver; sure there will be 3-7 days where you have to drive with some care on hardpack/unplowed roads but the rest of the year is generally fine. I've never had trouble with A/S, even in the parking lot at A-Basin.
But I've only ever used Blizzaks as snows, it seems the newer Alpin's and the Pirelli's sacrifice a little bit of ice grip for a lot of low-temp, dry road performance. We have a lot fo cold, dry days in CO winter.
I go back and forth, can't make up my mind.

(sorry for the thread jack) I'm glad I ordered DHP from what I'm hearing (actually it was the reason I ordered - and it was the reason i ordered an M50i and not a 50i. I am baffled why BMW doesn't allow DHP on the 40i and 50i)

I’ve lived in Denver since 2002. I didn’t have problems getting around in my Honda Accord or Chrysler Sebring with all season tires, or 2 previous X5’s with all seasons in the winter. Winters would be added security I suppose. I chose all season due to my high mileage driving.

And boo to BMWUSA for not allowing DHP on 40i!

Had DHP been available on the 40i, I would most likely have ordered one to replace my wife's '18 X5M. Overall however, I think the M50i is a better compromise for us right now. She never took advantage of the awesomeness of our X5M, and it was always a buzz kill when I would drive it with her in the car lol!!

Regarding the tires, I have two sets of 22" 742M (black and bi-color), and I've decided to slap on 275/315 Pirelli Winters. Despite not being ideal size-wise for winter conditions, I think the 19" and 20" winter packages are too fugly. And I always swap out my summer/winter setups myself. In fact, about to switch over to my winters on my M3CS shortly.

*today* my thought is separate snows, same rims; 22"'a come w summers so I have to buy something - no reason not to make it a tank for the winter. It's a lease so I'm not terribly concerned about rim damage and (for this car) I don't love the idea of buying a separate set of wheels.
I wish Alpin's were available in 22" - I've heard great things about them.

Looking forward to the collective wisdom of this forum-
Your ride quality - is tires.

Run flats are stiff as heck. Plus all seasons are not known for softest compound.

Get regular summer and winter sets in soft compound.

I use Michelin Pilot sport 4 SUV tire in summer
adn Michelin Pilot Alpine 5 SUV in winter

all 20" 275/45/20

Ride is great with regular M sport suspension. DHP does not improve damping - it only stiffens cross bars in cornering and adds steering gizmo with rear wheels.

Your ride is tire dependent.

Also for immediate fix - lower your pressures. Door jam recommends over 40 PSi - way too high - designed for full load - 5 passengers and cargo on German autobahn cruising at 130MPH for an hour.
For US - I use 33 front - 36 rear.
Bump rear to 38 if you have 3 adult passengers in back all the time

DHP does help with uneven surfaces because it can counter vibrations on one side. I wouldn't say it's th softest ride but compared to the normal M Adaptive without DHP it's much better. Air Suspensions are always floaty by nature compared to steel springs
