Here is the response from BMW for whatever it's worth:
Dear Customer, Thank you for contacting BMW Assist Customer Care. We recommend performing an Update Services in your vehicle to refresh the connection. This can be done by following the steps below: - Navigate to “ConnectedDrive” or “BMW Assist” using your iDrive controller. - Open “Options” (physical button surrounding your iDrive controller) - Click on “Update BMW Assist”. Once the update completes, we recommend shutting the vehicle off and allowing a few minutes before restarting the vehicle to check the connection. I was able to purchase lifetime back on Oct 10th. BMW must have since removed the ability to purchase lifetime. CarPlaystill shows as expiring in 20 years on my X5's iDrive. While the lifetime subscription used to display on the ConnectedDrive website, it now shows CarPlay expiring next month. As long as it shows lifetime on the vehicle - fine.

Today I have CarPlay. My subscription ran on 11/1 and wasn’t able to renew via website or phone. Today I checked via idrive and it’s back. F R E E so far.

Hopefully they'll do this for other services! The only other one I can imagine would be the same is the Digital Key since the other services are 3-4 years depending on your situation. Having an iPhone, I would definitely like to try this concept out for a year since it was already paid in a sense. I just laugh that certain Androids can utilize the Digital Key, but Android has no Android Auto. Meanwhile, no digital key on iPhone, but CarPlay. Crazy times we're living in!

I was having the same problem since mine runs out in December, when I called, the rep told me "you have to wait until it actually runs out to renew" (I told her I'll try back and "get somebody who doesn't just make things up when you don't know the answer" )
They e-mailed me back with this:

Just an update. I got back CarPlay that expired 11/1 however in apps options CarPlay isn’t even listed as an app that’s being used and on the website the option is still greyed out.
