Brakes spongy

I recently picked up a new 2019 X5 with the Msport pkg. it did not include Msport brakes. One major difference we notice compared to our Q7 is just how soft and spongy the brakes are. Is this normal? The brakes seem to work fine but you have to get very deep into them before they have any bite.

Did you delete the Msport brakes?
I thought the Msport brakes were a standard part of the Msport package, so what you have sounds unusual, never heard that one before.
I driven both a standard Xline and MSport equipped G05, and the Msport brakes (large blue calipers) make a huge difference. Stopping performance is awesome and the feel is very solid.

The brakes on the G05 are brake by wire so there is no physical linkage. Its just a pedal connected to a brake computer with an artificial feel simulator to make it feel like a normal brake pedal. I would say yours definitely needs some adjustment. Believe the G05 is the first bmw to have this system.

I'll never understand BMW's logic why differentiate for some markets (except for legal requirements) . In Belgium the blue calipers are standard included with an M Sport package

In some countries (Canada, Belgium, Australia) M Sport Package includes M Sport brakes (and M Sport exhaust). In other countries (US) M Sport Package only includes cosmetics and the adaptive suspension (unless you choose air suspension instead).

BMW has always done this kind of thing so that the resulting chaos on forums keeps us uncertain and confused about everything else going on with their cars and even makes us question our own objective reality. It's one theory ...

For me this is difficult, because under certain conditions, I do feel the brakes are not enough. However, that's when I am trying to beat the buns off the car on back roads or seizing the gap during rush hour. 99% of the time, when I am just cruising down the roads, the brakes are more than enough. I will admit that you need to plan your stops or "slow downs" earlier than with most other vehicles you may come across. I feel the X5 is definitely more of an SUV ride than other SUVs...hear me out. I would put the X5 on par with a Tahoe or Expedition. You are getting that comfy, quiet ride all while having a commanding presence on the road. Now you can upgrade your brakes, suspension, etc to fine tune some of these attributes.

To me, I feel like I am driving a truck again. It took me some time getting back into the groove of it, since other vehicles I've driven recently (X3, Explorer, and XC60) are definitely more on the crossover side and drive like a sedan. Personally, I love the X5 once I got this in my head. Now I'm sure most people won't agree with me on the premise, but if you're talking your basics, this is how I can equate it in terms of handling. It also gives me assurance that this vehicle is built like a brick shit house and isn't going to roll over and blow up when it hits a pothole.

Long story short, I felt the same way about the brakes when I first got the vehicle. With a little acclimation, I feel right back at home!

Can't speak to the non-M Sport, but the M Sport brakes on mine are some of the best stock I've driven. Not Brembo or Baer, but better than my Q7 by feel, and certainly enough for the car. You still need to bed them, but excellent brakes IMO.

I have the same brake package and feel that way about the brakes. Not what I have experienced on all of the other BMWs I've driven. Thought at first the spongy feel was on me due to just coming out of an F82 M4. Not the case and my wife has even commented on the brakes being soft.

Also, my G05 is in for oil service and software updates today. The G05 loaner they gave me has the same soft brake feel.

I had the 2019 M Sport brakes with off road pack. Loved them. Now have the 2020 M Sport without the M Sport brakes and they've been just as good. I didn't drive back to back to compare, but the next day in the new car I couldn't notice a difference under city, interstate and highway driving. Do miss the look though. Wish they were standard with the M Sport package. Assume the person who ordered and cancelled the car figured they were already included and didn't think to add to their build...

I thought my brakes were a bit on the soft side when I got the car (I have M-sport brakes) but you NEED to actually go out and /bed/ them.. Don't just let them 'bed themselves' -- just go out and do 60->0 and 60->0 and 60->0 until you feel them fade, then let them cool for a while, and do that again.

Since I've done that, the brakes are pretty mighty. I drove a few 'rallye style' sessions in the south of france, where you definitely feel you need them to stop the boat!

I'm not going to hijack this thread, but I've had my car for around 2 months, and my brakes (Msport) starting squeaking a few days ago - only when reversing at low speeds - see the other thread I've bumped.

Those Msport brake calipers are large, so while you get good performance out of them, I think they have their down side.

I'm not too worried about it, as I'm familiar with squeaking brakes and performance isn't normally affected - as long as the sound isn't metallic (Caliper with word down pad against rotor) - all good.

Has this squeaking in reverse happened to anyone with the standard/normal brakes?

Intermittent.

Also, we've just had a burst of VERY hot weather here in Oz, so I'm putting it down to the sudden change in going from cool/cold weather (like 14 C/ 57 F) to very hot (like 40 C/104 F) for the last few days.

I assume nothing to worry about?

Have my car booked in for 1st check since delivery in early December, if it continues I'll get them to check it out...

Best to get it checked out. I wasn't sure if maybe you got some moisture causing corrosion and backing up slowly you heard it rubbing. If that's the case, then no worries, since it's normal and will free up once you start driving/braking. I would see if it happens when you're backing up slowing after doing some driving.

I mentioned it in the other thread, but it does do it just backing up slowly with no braking, usually when I get home from work which is around a 30min drive in heavy traffic.

This is super helpful. My wife notices it as well. Our Q7 will throw you through the windshield with barely any pressure. I think it's just something I need to get used to.

I have M-sport brakes on my 328 and while I love the grip, the noise was horrible. After 6 months of complaining, BMW finally replaced the pads under warranty and the new pads are quiet. With that experience, I decided not to get m-sport brakes on the G05. The non-msport brakes on the G05 are not as grippy and you might call them soft and spongy by comparison, but I'm used to them now and they stop the vehicle just fine. I'd love msport brakes if they weren't so noisy so I guess its a compromise.

No noise at all on either of my X5s, but I did bed them both.

M Sport brakes bite harder, can be noisy and generate more brake dust than the standard brakes. Standard brakes have a softer pedal feel, braking comes on more gradual.

Has anyone added the M sport brakes after? I just recently purchased an X5 s40i. It has everything but the M brakes. I'm considering buying the part from BMW and adding it myself
