Idiocracy of Auto start/stop (ASS)

Is it normal for the engine to shut off immediately (blink of an eye) when brake is applied and vehicle is stopped (assuming all conditions have been met to initiate ASS)?

ASS is my most hated feature on this vehicle, and I can't turn this mother'fer permanently off. I normally hit the off button after pushing start. But there are times when I'm in a hurry and forgot to engage the ASS off button.

The engine will literally shut off in micro second after a stop. I did an experiment to see how many times ASS will cycle just pulling into my driveway and garage...minimum of 6 SS cycles! This is pure insanity.

The ASS is like the low flow toilet with 1.5 gal flush vs the old 3 gal before the environmentalists ruined it. If you go #2 in 1.5g you would have to flush as you go otherwise the toilet will most likely clog up...wasting more water and less effective. ASS can't be good for the engine and starter and it's dangerous in heavy traffic condition.

Why don't you get it coded?
I have coded it on the G30 and G01. Never done G05 yet, but it should work IMO.

Tell me about it. I hate tree huggers! It's dangerous in certain situations. Be glad though, you likely can get it coded eventually to permanently off, unlike in our volvo. Be glad you don't have to scroll screens to turn it off too. I have never used the auto/off in my 50i and never will!

Yes it is... I park an antique vehicle in front of my G05 in my garage. I have about 3-4 inches to spare in front and in back of the G05 to get the garage door down. It's easy actually - I have a tennis ball on a string. It hits my windshield. I park. Worked 100% of the time in my E70. Never an issue.

Now it's a problem. I stop the G05 and nudge forward a few inches. Stop again, nudge forward another inch, just trying to kiss that tennis ball. ASS - shuts off the vehicle. I go to nudge forward and the engine fires up and it surges 5-6 inches. So far I've had a few very close call collision experiences when my stereo was on and I don't hear the engine cuts out. Dangerous.

Agreed. FWIW if you select "sport" it turns off start stop. Yes its still a button press and should be able to stay off like the F15

This. It's a royal pain in the ass when inching into a tight garage space and you have forgotten to turn it off.

Is there a difference as to how ASS behaves between 50i and 40i? Do you always have the turn it off after you start the car?

No difference, the same function across motors. You have to turn it off manually each time after start up until it can be coded out permanently.

My wife's 2016 x3 ASS could be permanently defeated without coding. It influenced my decision to order her a new X5, I didn't realize they removed that ability. My neighbor got rid of a 3 month old Audi because of it. I despise that foolish nuisance.

"Coded?"

I'm new to this forum - what does "coded" mean in relation to disabling the ASS (Auto start/stop) function on the 2019 X5? Do I need to have my dealer do this or can Customer Service do it remotely

"Coded" means leveraging software to customize your car, via the OBD port. You will need an OBD adapter and software like bimmercode to customize.

I haven't researched it yet, but based on the replys, this can't currently be turned off via coding. Should be a matter of time until turning off Auto start/stop is an option.

A lot of us use bimmercode. On the website it explains what it is and what it can do. Also on the site it tells you of good obdb bluetooth adapters to use and how to use them. Once the g05 is supported you will be able to change a bunch of things like make ass remember its last posistion on/off. I think thats worth price of admission.

I just exchanged a handful of emails with Stephan Gauch at Bimmercode (he's been awesome!) this afternoon, and he told me that the G05 can be coded for "ASS memory coding and some options in the FZD" right now. He's pulled the car from the compatibility list because so few options can be coded right now, but ASS is one of them.

He also says to remember "to code with the engine off and diagnostic mode enabled only."

I'm still waiting on a OBDII reader to try this out, but hope this helps.

BMW should really have set a limit of how many ASS cycles can occur in a period of time. It is poor programming's fault on BMW (not some abstract treehuggers) that it's possible for G05 drivers to experience more than 6 ASSes just pulling into their garages.

I have the ENET OBDII cable and E-Sys installed but I'm holding off until things get sorted a little more. Other path is to work with a remote coder - which I've looked into as well. Both work. It's just early.
