M50i exhaust options?

What is the best way to improve the X5 M50i exhaust? Is there any way to make it sound like it does at startup, when driving in sport mode? Seems as though after 2-3 minutes this engine really quiets down.

I have seen some do a resonator delete, but I am worried about drone.

What is the best way to give the X5 M50i a little more life under acceleration?

I did a resonator delete on my X6 M50i. No drone so far on local or highway. It gets a liiiiiitle bit louder with the resonator delete and an X pipe weld in place of it, but not by much. The biggest difference is you just do an entire muffler delete.

I'm having the same issue as you where I want to make it sound like startup when driving in sport mode.

Would you recommend the resonator delete?

It’s a shame there is no easy solution to this. I’ve done some research and there seems so be very limited aftermarket exhaust options

Resonator delete is not even close to what you hear at start up. You need muffler delete.

i have a 2019 50i m sport, just did a mid-muffler delete last weekend, save your money and look into modifying the rear muffler, that's what I'm looking into doing now also. mid mufflers are not like past generations when they were bigger, i added an H pipe and it sounds a little deeper and louder, cant speak for what is sounds like outside the car tho

Thanks for the info. Will look into this.

Wish there was an easy aftermarket exhaust solution.

The cheapest way to get it louder is to permanently open up the valves. You could do this a number of ways such as removing the fuse while the valves are open (I believe they open up at 40 MPH) or literally just welding it open by playing around with the little screw/nut on the tailpipes that open/close the valves. I did the latter and it seems to have a noticeable sound difference. Not as loud as a muffler delete however..

You could also cut open the muffler and redirect some of the airflow within the muffler or just replace the stock muffler with one half the size of it. That'll require a skilled muffler shop and more money to do though - if I had to guess $500-900.

Here is mine at cold start and some revs.
Mods for sound
-Resonator delete with straight pipes
-AA catted downpipes
-Flaps always open

Direct bolt on, no. Sizing of pipe is smaller on M50i where it needs to hook up.

Exits are completely different as well. Too much fabrication for a part that costs an arm an a leg to begin with.

Thank you! I will look into catless downpipes and res delete and/or permanently opening valves.

Anyone know if a resonator delete is reversible? I have a lease vehicle so wouldn’t want to do anything that isn’t reversible.

I have the x5m but I also didn't want to do anything that wasn't reversible and was so surprised about how much the sound changed when I added changed to a cat back exhaust and did the resonator delete. night and day difference. Just wish I would've done it sooner

Here is my setup:
Xpipe
Muffler Delete
Exhaust Tips

Some droning noise @ 1800 RPM (comfort mode), but drop it into sport mode, and it is fine.

Yes, it can be welded back in place.

Hey man do you have any pictures of your exhaust setup? Did you pretty much do what hufington did and add the 2 single resonators in place of the muffler? Thanks!

No pictures of it from underneath, but did copy Huffingtons setup. Worked out great.

I definitely think that sound so far is the cleanest. Not a huge fan of just the resonator delete/x pipe install. Haven’t heard it in person, but through video just seems to raspy. I guess I could always start there and then add the rear setup later. Do you get a lot of cracks and pops when revving? Also, what brand did you go with for the resonators? Vibrant?
