Sport seats (w/lumbar) vs Multi Contour
I have seen the other threads on this - but specifically is the difference in adjustment ONLY that the Multi will bend in the middle of the backrest? Does the lumbar go up and down in the sports? They both have side bolster adjustment? Coming from a F15 with comfort...

In the illustration below (from the parts database).item #1 & #2 can be offered on the sport seats...if it has the lumbar option, then it will have #2 (the round lumbar switch/button). If you have the multi-contour or the M-multifunction seats...then you will have #3 (the multi-contour seats have the upper articulating back). Illustration/description of the seat switch below is from the online BMW TIS website:

Thanks - top response. Am I right thinking there's no memory on anything but the multi contour? Or just no memory buttons - is it saved in the key profile?

We have standard sport seats + lumbar option on order. For the driver seat all of this can be stored in memory (with buttons I suppose + in driver profile in key). The difference with multi contour is that upper backerst ajustment is not available, manual head rests, and seat depth adjustment is manual

The actual shape of the multi-contour seats is what makes all the difference. Sport seats have more of that 'bucket' feeling however their comfort is far inferior to the multi-contour seats. The sport seats are like chairs whereas the multi-contour are like a single seat sofa.

I have the luxury seating package and the multi contour seats are extremely comfortable. 100% adjustable and makes for an entirely different driving experience. Well worth it

The difference isn't only just in the adjustments but also leather pattern design to support the upper backrest adjustment which will influence seat comfort.
Standard Sport seats and leather pattern (Vernasca) Multi-contour seats and leather pattern (Vernasca)

EDIT:...back to one of the online parts database and TIS websites again (for verification)...there are two memory seat settings based on if optioned...and that switch is located on the upper door panel near the window switches and handle that opens the front doors. If you click the link below the parts database lists the option code that indicates if you have seat memory option: Below is the functional description of the driver's door memory switch (if so optioned, the passenger front door is similar minus the "gentlemen's switch button):

Love you guys! Thanks for all the responses - so much detail! I think if I am taking extended Merino I HAVE to take multi contour (Australia) - Am thinking M50i, CBM with Cognac, comes with 22's

Multi-contour seats are the most comfortable I've had in any car. My Q7 had the Luxury Package with Valcona, and these are a step above those at least. The Merino leather also seems to wear better, even after a short time. The upper backrest adjustment seems to make a huge difference in extended driving comfort as well - I didn't realize I was continually leaning forward with my shoulders on the other seats, and always wondered why my upper back and neck were sore after a four hour drive. Couldn't recommend them more highly.

I might be in the minority here, but I do not find the multi-contour seats comfortable and think they have a major flaw.
I mainly drive my X5 on long road trips, and I just cannot find a position that is comfortable. The seat itself is fairly hard, and I just find myself having to make constant adjustments to the seating position throughout the drive, yet can never get comfortable. On to the major flaw... I was so excited when I got the X5 that I could adjust the backrest of the seats for better shoulder support (as Paladin1 points out above). However, the most frustrating thing ever is that when you adjust the backrest forward for better shoulder support, it also moves the headrest forward too — and it is not possible to individually move the headrest backward independent of the backrest. So it's impossible to have good shoulder support while having your head tilted back, making long drives very uncomfortable. So dumb. |

If you have a button on the side of your headrest...I think they might be adjustable to accommodate (your head) when the upper articulating back has been moved forward. Do you all have a button on the side of your front headrests like in the pic below:
A Crash-active head restraint (not triggered) B Crash-active head restraint (triggered) 1 Front section of the head restraint 2 Head restraint support 3 Button for setting the head restraint (depth adjustment) 4 On activation, max. total path forwards: 60 millimetres 5 On activation, max. total path upwards: 40 millimetres 6 Mechanical system for setting the head restraint as well as for motion of the head restraint in a triggering process The button for setting the head restraint (depth adjustment) is installed in the side face of the front section of the head restraint. It enables the position of the front section of the head restraint to be varied in 3 positions by up to 30 millimetres depending on what the occupant wants. For the forward depth adjustment, the front section of the head restraint only needs to be pulled (2 lock positions). For the backward depth adjustment, press the button in the front section of the head restraint. This releases the latch mechanism. The front section of the head restraint can be pressed backwards.

When you upgrade from standard sport seats to multi-contour, you lose the headrest depth adjustment.

I have the multi-contour and love them and it's in for 10,000 mile service so we have a loaner with the regular seats. We HATE them. I had a backache before I got home from the dealer.

Asked the dealer today about the new m multifunction seats. Headrest is fixed and cannot be moved up/down. Also travel/usb ports on the back are not an option with those seats. So I’ll stick to the multicontour seats.

One of my top priorities when I custom ordered my car was the multi contour seats, I hate the sport seats on my F15, I can't wait to enjoy the new car with those comfort seats, the upper back adjustment is just great, I remember it from my former 2010 X6M

I was reading the online manual (don’t have the new car yet) and It said lumbar support settings (if you have the option) on sport seats are not stored in memory. Off course they didn’t mention this in the dealership, when I asked they told me the opposite. I think even for the multi-countour it was mentioned that it was not stored, which would seem odd. Can someone confirm this on both the sport and multi-contour seats? (The 2 people that have the sport seats🙂 )
