USB Media and iDrive 7
Since moving from iDrive5 to iDrive7 and having to abandon my portable hard drive for a memory stick, I am having issues with music media. In particular, album art is at best inconsistent. Does anybody know if in iDrive7, the album art should be embedded into the tracks or if it is using the folder.jpg method? I called the Genius hotline and basically got no answers. In some cases I thought it had to due with the dimensions of the album art because I had some larger ones. I resized them to 200x200 and they are still not showing up. I expect issues with new software but I'm just looking for the spec that iDrive7 is using so I can edit the over 600 albums I currently have.

If that’s the only issue you’re having with music via USB on iDrive 7, consider yourself lucky. It is a mess for me. Missing content via USB drive, newer iPod/Apple devices won’t browse and go on repeat randomly. The old iPod Classic, oddly enough, will browse but frequently gets set to repeat and reboots too. Total mess.

I'm real new to iDrive and music but unless something is hidden, I didn't download the album art but it does show up. I have just been copying the album folder of the album I want to import on a usb and that is it. I import it and the album art shows up in iDrive. I was under the impression that iDrive goes out and gets the album art based on tags in the mp3/flac file but maybe the art is in there and I haven't noticed.
I have not had any problems with the iDrive and my media so far. All plays like it should and "Hey BMW" does a great job playing by artist or album. Edit: There could be a difference because I'm importing and you are just using USB but I thought in my tests of playing form a USB the album art showed up also. |

The online manual came back up so I was able to check. Like I mentioned, it looks like the album art is based on the information in the audio file. Looks like it uses Gracenote to determine it and checks its database for the info.

I have that issue with FLAC audio on mine but it's not a huge deal. I could go in and manually fix it on my files but that's too much work because iDrive doesn't like a handful of albums.

what's lousy about using gracenote is that I have older albums, imports etc...I manually put album art in from a scan in cases of no online images. I wish it would use art if present. I also make changes to things based on my needs. i want to do an experiment tonight on one album. i will delete it from my library, re-rip it with zero changes and see if gracenote finds it.

also, when I do "options" all I get is a pop up screen that has 2 options. HELP and TURN SCREEN OFF. That leads me to believe that iDrive7 has a different path or doesnt support that functionality anymore

Evidently in addition to the Gracenote technology referenced in the OM this is also a way it gets the album art. I did a test where I took a few mp3s and created an album for them in iTunes and assigned a jpg as the album art. I moved those to a Windows machine to make sure the artwork showed just in the mp3 files and then I put them into iDrive and the artwork that I assigned for the album showed. Thanks for mentioning this, gives me a way to put something in their for the compilations I make.

I know it reads a Folder.jpg file in the playlist, up to (at least 800x800, and down to 500x500, maybe even 400x400. 200x200 is likely a bit small.
