There is currently no way to see what is in each release. Part of the OTA process is supposed to include a summary of what is in the upgrade but until that happens and we see the contents I wouldn’t hold out hope they will be helpful.

That's a great idea , but I think the Service departments would probably just upgrade your car to the latest, if they see your car is on an earlier release.
I keep saying this, but I'm on 07/2019.47 - and everything I use just works fine, just the reverse camera thing staying in check after I select Drive, but that doesn't bother me - after I've reversed I'm pretty much done when I park !

I'm about to take my car in for the first vehicle check (due in December), and I'm nervous about 11/2019.xx - I dont want anything broken leading up to Xmas and the New Year break...

Lucky you! Just tell them not to upgrade the software. How do they upgrade it? Via some port in the engine bay, cabin or OBDII? Find that port and cover it up and put a note on it not to upgrade and have the service person put it in writing that you don't want it upgraded

I've booked my car in, and looks like they're likely to upgrade me - as there is an Active recall on my car, see below:

Dealer is not going to update software unless customer has a complaint that is known to be fixed by a software update. Only other cases are a key scan has a notice/campaign from BMW to update software or if a module needs to be changed triggering a software update.

ISTA 4.20.30 is available in the US. This is a November 2019 update, possibly the 11/2019.30 others have reported. It's more likely your dealer hasn't taken the time to download the latest update. In some cases dealers hold off because these iStep level updates have had their fair share of problems. Some dealers prefer to wait it out a bit before they commit to the latest version.

Thanks for the info. That’s probably the case. Honestly, 07/2019 seems to be working and running smooth. Unless there’s some huge feature added or fix like the camera handoff from R to D, I’m holding off. Just comes down to BMW releasing some notes. 07/2019 didn’t have release notes, so whether it was laziness on BMW’s behalf or only bug fixes, it seems like it’s not worth the energy or time to go down and beg for an update.

Out of curiosity, where did you get the ISTA info? I’m clueless on that, but was wondering if it includes any pertinent info. Thanks.

BMW has historically not released notes with version updates. Even dealers struggle to get a list of fixes and they typically learn of software fixes through PUMA/TSARA cases they open.

It's only via the remote software update feature in iDrive 7 that BMW has sent written release notes. And even those are highly filtered so as not to reveal any more than they want customers in the field to know.

Check coding forums to see details on ISTA releases. Again, you won't find release notes.

To get Bluetooth working, my SA advised me to upgrade the phones to iOS13.

Problem is, see above. Catch 22.

For the twelve and one-half months that I've owned my car, both CarPlay and Bluetooth have been hit or miss, at best. I don't have the time or resources to file a class action lawsuit, but someone needs to. Minimally, everyone in my boat deserves a one-year extension of CarPlay.

What companies like Apple and BMW are doing to consumers is total bullshit. Early adopters are viewed now as beta testers, all in the name of innovation and competitiveness.

Not sure if it's due to pie-in-the-sky CEOs, over-eager CMOs, incompetent Product Managers, or Developers triggered by the wrong color bean bag chairs in the company lounge. But it's gotta stop.

Mine's in for it upgrading today (UK)

Tech said something about it being a quality update which will improve communications and driving assistant features.

Well mine was upgraded about 2 weeks ago to 11/2019.30
All has been well since. Before this upgrade i had some car play issues and bmw connected music issues. Kept dropping and only way to resolve was to delete profile and set up from scratch.
The dealer in the Uk was a bit sketchy about everything it did but said it updated some part of the ECU. I thought that was a bit strange as i thought it was only Idrive functions.
All the apps are now in colour but my rear lights cannot be turned off whist driving. Before they could be. I guess some countries its law to have them on.
All in all it does seem pretty stable now so it has worked.

He was probably referring to the ECU's that contain the various settings for iDrive and not the traditional Engine Control Unit.

The only issue I've had with 11/2019.30 is sometimes Spotify starts on its own accord, even if media is turned off.
