50i vs 40i preference in M-Sport?
I saw my first M-Sport today and really liked the look. It was a 50i in Blue with Cognac. Really well done.
Anyone made the decision between the 50i and 40i? I’m really tempted to get the 50i and enjoy the heck out of it, but the new 40i is much quick than my current F15 35i. I haven’t worked out the price difference yet. Guessing around 5-6K between the two with the same equipment. |

I have the 40i and the same packages on the 50i would have been ~$10k more.
The 40i is certainly quick enough to do what you need it to do. But to me, it doesn't "feel fast" compared to my old Audi S4. The 40i certainly gets better fuel economy than the 50i, so really you need to decide if ~$10k and somewhat worse fuel economy are worth it to make the X5 "feel fast." |

The 50i is a monster. It is soo much faster and more powerful than the 40i and the 40i is quick so that’s saying a lot. Test drive them both as they are different animals. A nicely loaded 50i M-sport is around $100k.

50i all the way, it's so much more refined thanks to the nice TT V8 having plenty of power and you can get the DHP let's face it the V8 sounds better too

Depends on what you want. 40i was plenty fast enough for me as I was more concerned about the luxury and drive. Drive feels better than the 2013 550i msport I had.
If super fast SUVs is your thing and the price and fuel economy isn't an issue, then go for the 50i. Only thing I really want from the 50i is the DHP. They really should have made that an option in the 40i. |

I got a 40i coming from a 50i F15. If you have the means, it's an easy choice. The 50i will put a smile on your face. You might get more tickets, and you might find yourself starting it with the garage door closed (temporarily) just so you can bask in the awesome exhaust burble at startup. Nice motor.

Drove the 50i tonight. What a machine! It was so incredibly smooth.
Only thing I didn’t like was a tad of turbo lag I didn’t notice in the 40i. Once the 50i is going, the thing is insane. Just off a stop felt a split second to get going. Toss the options on he 50i and the price goes up quickly. But I think I’ve fallen for the 8 cyl. Damn |

Adpative mode feels more of what I'd call normal, hell the turbos don't make boost 80% of the time, pull up the full sports displays and you'll see what I mean ie why I said it's not turbo lag

The 50i is definitely more fun engine wise, and the DHP that is available only on the 50i gives it a handling advantage as well ; but keep in mind the starting price delta is closer to $15k (per the BMW website) plus another 3-4k for the DHP addition. So it is up to you whether you like it enough to pay for it. The numbers tell one story, but you cannot dismiss the tactile fun element of it, including the amazing sound track from the v8.
However despite all this, for me, the 40i was fun enough and I used the money to splurge on other options, such as the BW audio, the extended leather dash, the luxury seats and a few other things that I didn’t really need but wanted to have it for fun. It’s a pity that DHP isn’t available on the 40i. |

I will be leasing and initially, was heading towards the 40i or, if available, the Hybrid. I was planning on getting a fully loaded one which actually matters when comparing the pricing of the two. The options the 50i has standard cuts down the difference in pricing from $15K to $10K.
Now, if you are leasing, the higher residual value will take care of about half of that so of the initial $15K, you might end up paying only $5K which I believe isn't too bad at all. The pricing of the new M50i will be interesting. Since this is already starting as an M, there will be no upcharge for an M Package or M Brakes. I'm wondering if the total price of a loaded one will be that much more than what the 50i is right now. My gut tells me no and if that's the case, the M50i will be an even better deal. There won't be many 530 HP luxury SUVs out there that can compete with the X5's pricing. Certainly not Porsche. |

Our 50i was about $15k more than a comparable 40i build. It's well worth the extra money for the v8 - it's a beast! And if you're paying this much for a vehicle does fuel economy really matter? That said - I agree that you should test drive one of each to decide. But be warned - once you drive a 50i, you won't want to settle for the 40i. Good luck!

I came from a Tesla 100D, so nothing feels that fast by comparison. I went with the 40i since my priority was comfort and refinement more than performance. However, the 40i is by no means slow, so I would say picking the 50i is more about the character and sound of the V8.

Its a tough choice, but 40 makes a lot of sense
I have a F15 50 and do love it but it's a big motor for my style of driving. Living in New York it's more about brakes than your engine these days. I'm not one to punch it off the line often. More about merge and pass speed which will put a smile on your face. About once a month I step into the throttle 90% and it will toss your head back even from 60-75mph.
Though given the new X5 I think I will go with the 40 when considering my needs and that the truck has become better on the road. My complaint with the current 50 is sloppy road manners and very jerky off the line. If they fix that I might go again with a 50 but the 40 would be a smoother around town drive I think. |

I think the 40i is perfect for the size and weight of the X5. The straight six is so smooth and the gas mileage is pretty good. I drove an X7 and that vehicle needs the V8 for sure, but in the X5 I think the inline 6 is a better choice for most people.

I know I'm getting older cause I'm thoroughly impressed by the 40i. For this size SAV, it's quick enough to satisfy me nowadays. I spend most of my driving in Portland stop and go traffic so the 8 banger is overkill as were previous M cars. I love the silky smooth inline 6. Decent mpg too. I'd like a sportier sounding exhaust, that's about it.
