X5 Rattling Noise Trunk

Hi all,

I've been the owner of an X5 40D for 1.5 months, which I bought used. I purchased the car directly from a BMW dealer in Germany, and for the past few weeks, I've been experiencing a rattling noise from the rear right side. I've already removed all objects from the trunk, but the noise persists. It occurs when driving over a curb or on uneven roads. Even a manhole cover can trigger the rumbling.

I've sat in the trunk myself while my wife drove in and out of the driveway. I was able to pinpoint the noise to the corner.

The panels themselves are all tight and do not rattle. When I press against the panels with my hands, it has no effect and the noises are still there. It seems to me that something behind it is loose or wobbling.

Do you know what might be causing this? Is it a common issue? Can you provide any tips for resolving this problem?

Cheers

Pretty common issue, I've faced with it before as many others. If you searched through the forum you'd find lots of topics regarding this issue. When it comes to solutions, two main options are:
- align trunk levels (or boot stops - whatever you call it):

- put an electrical tape around each of the metal tabs/boot catches (worked for me):

Not sure why BMW couldn't come up with a proper design of a latch mechanism. Build quality (especially on US plant) decreases as well over time. Be prepared to chase more rattles in the future since it's kind of nonstop process with many X5s. It’s just ridiculous that people buying an X5 often have to run around with electrical tape throughout the cabin, trying to find the source of various noises, as if they had bought some kind of garbage.

There is not much behind that trim piece that can rattle. Below are picks from my US-spec, left-hand drive '22 40i. In the pic of the right side, that cable you see was added by me. It's for the rear half of a dash cam system.
