Winter tires suggestions

Got my x5 2020 not too long ago and the dealership threw in 4 brand new winter tires without rims - 285/40 R21. I’m trying to get rims for them but some folks say that the tires are too wide and maybe I should downsize a bit. I have 21s summers on now staggered. The winters that I got are all 4 the same and are : Nokian tyres Hakkapelitta 9 SUV - told they are pretty good tires/expensive.

Live in toronto so winters could be fun.

I have something very similar... I have a 2020 X5M Competition and I'm struggling to get answers on winter tires. The dealer said I need to stay with a staggered configuration, but when I went onto getbmwparts website, it shows that there's a SKU: 36-11-2-471-521 and 36-11-2-471-522 which will give me:

(FRONT) F95 X5M, F96 X6M 21" Style 808M Double Spoke Orbit Grey Winter Wheel/Tire - 10,5Jx21 ET:31. Includes wheel with mounted Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV (295/35R21 107V), TPM, and center cap installed

(REAR)
F95 X5M, F96 X6M 21" Style 808M Double Spoke Orbit Grey Winter Wheel/Tire - 11Jx21 ET:48. Includes wheel with mounted Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV (295/35R21 107V), TPM, and center cap installed

When I try and go to tirerack and do a 21" configuration same size 295/35R21 all the around, it complains and both the dealer and tirerack have said that this cannot be ordered that way. That the 295's are a rear size tire and too big to put on the front.

Can anyone verify this for me!? HELP! I'm headed on vacation and was hoping this would be an easy order before I left! Thanks everyone!!

Do 21x9.5 rims work with 285/40 tires? Any potential issues?

My summers are staggered 275/40 and 315/35 but winters will be square

No, you do not need to stick with the staggered set up. I got my winter wheel package from BMW two years ago for my 2022 X6M. It's a square 21" set up - 295 all around and I have the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 tires. I believe it's the same part numbers you show above.

I don't get 295s are too wide for front tires. Our summers are 295 front and 315 rear.

It is 1% larger than oem 21” in term of overall diameter. Do it for all 4 corners should be ok.

Width is fine. Check offset. Same or similar to oem should be good

cmyx6go Can you clarify on this?

I don't get 295s are too wide for front tires. Our summers are 295 front and 315 rear.

What does that mean?
